Retro Video Game Review: Power Stone 2

If you like crazy brawlers like Super Smash Bros, Power Stone 2 may be a game that you may have missed. This game, released on the Sega Dreamcast back in August of 2000, is the successor to Power Stone released back in 1999.

The game is a 3D arena fighter that allows players to use an array of characters with different moves and abilities. The game features several modes including arcade mode, original mode and one-on-one modes. Each plays out differently and gives players a variety of things to do. There are also things to unlock like new characters and new maps.

The game’s story focuses on beating opponents and collecting gems called power stones. Gathering three power stones allows the player to go into their “super forms.” These forms are what make the game something special. Players have new projectiles to target enemies and eliminate the competition. Each player also has two super moves that cause a massive amount of damage to your competitors. Chaos truly unfolds as multiple players duke it out in their super forms.

The game also contains a lot of content. Weapons like bazookas, fire swords and even panthers are yours to help give you the edge in the fight. Let me reiterate, panthers are weapons in this game! These items appear randomly on the battlefield and are up for grabs while players are brawling it out. Some items are rare to get and players will go crazy to go after.

Players can also collect weapons and special cards to create new weapons that can be used during battles. This feature is one of the best uses of creation seen in a video game. Mixing and matching weapons to create newer and more powerful items is incredible.

As a player, you never feel like you have all the items in the game and you keep making more. It is an absolute genius addition to an already great game.

Even with all the items included, Power Stone 2 keeps the experience balanced and well-rounded for newcomers. New players can adjust by playing a few matches in order to learn the ropes. There are also settings that can be changed at anytime to make the game customizable to your own style. Factors that can be changed include changing the amount of power stones on the field, the damage ratio, and time set for matches.

Though Power Stone 2 is an older game, it’s still fantastic nonetheless. The massive amount of content included will have players duking it out for days and the addicting gameplay is unmatched to even today’s video games.
