Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is getting a fourth movie titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with a completely new, mature tone and style. The official trailer was released to much success, reaching 1 billion views in just 4 days.
The trailer opens with Spider-Man hanging from a skyscraper beam, watching a video on his phone of his friends Ned and MJ, who have now forgotten who Peter Parker is after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Spider-Man then pulls on his mask, falling in the sky, with a shot from within the mask, where we can see Peter Parker’s eye. This is a great time to mention the new director, Destin Daniel Cretton, who is replacing Jon Watts in the new Spider-Man movie. His style, from this trailer alone, is so stylized and creative. The mature tone really shines through just the small snippets we see. He brings many changes from the initial “Home Trilogy,” including practical web-swinging action and a gorgeous-looking practical suit.
The suit looks slightly different than the one we saw at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. To start, it’s practical rather than a full CGI model. The blue is darker than the shiny blue we saw in the last suit, and the eyes are narrower, giving this version of Spider-Man a more mature look. Once the movie releases, this costume could dethrone the beloved The Amazing Spider-Man 2 costume as the best live-action Spider-Man suit.
Getting back to the trailer, we hear a narration from Peter Parker himself saying, “Hi, my name is Peter Parker”. We see Peter flip up a note containing the entire narration, leading many fans to believe it is a note he’s considering giving to MJ to make her remember him again. This could be interesting to see, especially if Peter considers it, as the right decision is unclear.
A great shot from the trailer is the shot of the washing machine with Peter’s Spider-Man costume inside. This shot encapsulates what I hope will be the tone for the next movie. Peter is alone, broke, and depressed, like any beloved Spider-Man story. We didn’t really get to see that in the past 3 movies, so it will be exciting to see it with the fourth installment.
As Spider-Man sums up the events of the last movie, we see more action bits, including a tank, as shown in numerous set photos. We see more of the tank throughout the trailer as well. This suggests that either the tank scene will be pivotal to the story, or the trailer doesn’t want to show too much, which is really refreshing. It’s a positive note that not much is being revealed, including who Sadie Sink will be playing in the film, since it is fun to experience a Marvel movie without the whole plot being leaked or predicted.
A shot is shown in the trailer of the Punisher hitting Spider-Man with his iconic “Battle Van”. The two bicker before Spider-Man webs him up and tells him to go home. The bitter dynamic between these two characters is interesting because it gives Spider-Man a bit of an edge that was present in older Spider-Man comics but is often missing from popular movies and cartoons.
We see a scene where Peter Parker is presumably at MJ’s apartment for a party and sees her with another man who seems to be interested in her. This has fans worried, as this character could be Paul, a character who steals MJ from Peter in the new The Amazing Spider-Man comic run. Many fans, including me, absolutely hate this character because it sets Peter and MJ’s relationship so far back, so hopefully this isn’t repeated in the movie. At the very least, don’t make the man’s name Paul.
After this concerning bit, we see Peter, sweaty and looking ill. He passes out on the ground, and from there, we see him dig out of a web cocoon with organic webs. This is very interesting because it suggests that Peter is transforming. As he passes out, Peter says, “What is happening to me?”
More evidence to support this, we see Spider-Man being scanned in a machine, possibly being tested. We see Peter at his college after this, asking his professor, Dr. Banner, for help. This could be Dr. Banner scanning Spider-Man to see what is happening to him.
After this, we see more signs of transformation, such as a heightened spider sense and Spider-Man testing out his new organic webs, as Dr. Banner comments on the dangers of mutation, possibly relating to his experiences as the Hulk.
We then hear a voice, most likely Tombstone, an organized crime Spider-Man villain, talks about the life cycles of spiders and “rebirth”, going with the tone of a “brand new day”/new era for Spider-Man.
We see Spider-Man finally stop the aforementioned tank, where we see a woman confused after multiple soldiers act weird, as though they are being taken over, possibly by Jean Grey, whom Sadie Sink is rumored to be playing.
Various comic covers like “Amazing Fantasy 15” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 134” are recreated after we get our first shot of the Scorpion played byMichael Mando, who has been awaited since the end credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming. Soon after these shots, the trailer ends.
This trailer is very exciting and is set up to be the best Spider-Man movie yet. With all the fun rumors and excitement circulating, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is sure to be a hit in theatres on July 31st.
