The long-awaited series Invincible is finally back for its fourth season. The season will have 8 total episodes, 4 of which have already been released.
Episode 1, “Making the World a Better Place,” starts the season off on a great note. In the episode, we see the world recovering from the events of season 3, following the destruction caused by the Invincible War and Conquest’s attack. The people of Earth still blame Invincible (Mark Grayson) for all the damage and death that resulted from these events.
While dealing with the immense guilt over the events of season 3, Mark must also face old enemies like the Sequids, parasite-like aliens that take over civilians’ bodies, not unlike Starro from DC Comics. Mark and the Guardians of the Globe must face aliens and save civilians. Mark ends up killing the main host of the Sequids to end it all, which haunts him for the rest of the episode. Cecil is understanding of Mark but remains cautious of Mark, especially after Mark’s aggression towards him in season 3.
We are introduced to Dinosaurus, my absolute favorite character in the franchise. Invincible fights the villain and finds that Dinosaurus thinks the death he caused is a good thing, since Earth is overpopulated and needs its population reduced. Dinosaurus then turns into a regular man, since the villain functions like the Hulk, but, instead of anger, indifference releases the monster. I find this character’s philosophy unique and interesting, and I hope to see many more of them in the future.
In episode 2, “I’ll Give You the Grand Tour”, Allen the alien and Omni Man board a lackluster spaceship to collect weapons to take down the Viltrumite Empire. Theadus, the leader of Allen’s planet, is revealed to have been the one to release the Scourge Virus, a deadly virus that kills Viltrumites. We find out he also has more for backup, which will likely come into play later during the Viltrumite War.
After many road bumps, Allen and Omni Man can recover the resources they need to take down the Viltrumites, including recruiting Space Racer, a gun-wielding, space-cycle-riding alien, to join them in this war.
In episode 3, “I Gotta Get Some Air”, we see Invincible busy fighting alongside the Guardians of the Globe against the Flaxans (again) while Kid Omni Man (Mark’s brother, Oliver), is hired by Titan, to take down Mister Liu, (a man who can turn into a giant dragon) to get revenge for trying to assassinate his family.
In the chaos of the Flaxan fight, Monster Girl and Rex go through their portal and get trapped on Flaxan Planet.
After the fight ends, Invincible and Kid Omni Man take down the dragon. In a fit of rage for endangering his brother, Invincible beats Titan almost to death before being stopped by Oliver.
Finally, episode 4, titled “Hurm,” feels mostly like filler. Invincible fights demons in Hell along with Damien Darkblood. We get a cool voice role from Bruce Campbell, who plays Satan himself.
The only really important things to note about the episode are: 1) we find that Atom Eve’s powers are failing because she is pregnant, but before she can tell Mark, Omni Man, and Allen, the alien arrives on Earth, leaving a huge cliffhanger for episode 5, which will release next week on Wednesday.
Overall, I think this season of Invincible is off to a great start, and I cannot wait to see how they handle the Viltrumite War, Dinosaurus, and Thragg in later episodes. The tone could get a lot darker because of these things, and will probably handle deep topics like abortion, shown through Atom Eve’s pregnancy, if they are to follow the comics. I am highly interested in seeing where the other episodes go.
