As the Backrooms become more extensive and popular, a film titled Backrooms is now in production and will be released this May. The trailer recently dropped, and now fans are speculating what to expect. The director of the film, Kane Parsons, has been involved in the Backrooms lore for a very long time.
He first started making Backrooms videos under the channel name Kane Pixels at just 16 years old, in January of 2022, with his infamous video “The Backrooms (Found Footage)”. A24 has hired Parsons to direct the film, and fans are pretty excited, especially after seeing his well-received Backrooms series on YouTube. Here are some of my thoughts and hopes for the upcoming Backrooms movie.
Since Kane Parsons is directing, he will likely draw inspiration from his Backrooms YouTube series, meaning lots of areas, music, and backstory from the Backrooms could be present in the film. The areas we will likely see are the already confirmed area 1. Other notable areas/rooms that could appear in the film include Area 5 (The Pool Rooms), The Courtyard of Windows, and the Red Neighborhood.
I would also love to see other levels, such as level 94, aka “Motion,” with the bright, infinite neighborhood; Level Run, an extensive, red-lit hallway; and Level Fun, an area with many birthday party rooms. I don’t think they are as likely to appear as the others mentioned before, considering that they did not appear in the Pixels series.
As for the music, the most likely track I see making it into the movie is “School Rooftop” by Hisohkah, since it was in the second entry of Pixel’s series. Unfortunately, I doubt the movie will have any pre-established Backrooms-affiliated music, but rather an original soundtrack.
I think it would be really interesting if they added some of the past tracks associated with the Backrooms. My personal picks would be any Jack Stauber tracks, “Numbers” by TEMPOREX (great for the opening), “7 Weeks & 3 Days” by yungatita, “I’d Rather Sleep” by Kero Kero Bonito, “Hey Kids” by Molina, “Still Life” by Sitcom as well as “Six Forty Seven” and “Comfort Chain by Instupendo. All these tracks give off a comforting yet disturbing feeling associated with the Backrooms. I think fans would love to hear these familiar tracks in the movie.
There are so many great songs like these that fit the vibe the Backrooms give off, and all the tracks I have picked are heavily associated with the Backrooms story. I’d be very happy to see at least one of these tracks included in the film, as they helped the Backrooms story build an identity and have brought new fans along with it.
As for the story, there will be entities as Parsons included them in his YouTube series, but they will not be the main feature of the film. The whole appeal of the Backrooms lies in their emptiness and unknowns. That is where true horror lies. As in the YouTube series, the US government will likely run the Backrooms for profit from storage and housing.
There are multiple actors in the cast, so they will likely play government workers inspecting the backrooms before getting lost, chased by an entity, etc. My hope for the story is that it takes a VHS/camera POV style, as many fan films do, and adds an extra level of horror and uniqueness to the Backrooms.
All in all, I think this film will be great. It’s under a lot of pressure, and people are already beginning to critique it. It can be scary to see such a niche fandom, once made exclusively by fans, receive a big Hollywood film. I understand the fear many fans have, but I think we can rest easy since what we’ve been shown looks nothing short of amazing.
