Michael Jackson, the famous singer-songwriter, faced multiple allegations over the years, the most notable being child sex abuse and molestation accusations.
The topic of his innocence has long since been a heated debate. Was Michael Jackson innocent, or was he the guilty man many wanted him to be?
In 1993, the Los Angeles Police Department first began investigating Jackson on the allegations of the molestation of four children. However, the police were never able to find evidence supporting the allegations and incriminating Jackson, either at his Neverland Ranch or his Los Angeles home.
A month later, in September of 1993, the Chandler family filed a civil suit against Michael Jackson, claiming that he sexually abused Evan Chandler’s son, and in December of the same year, LaToya Jackson, Michael Jackson’s sister, confirmed in an interview that the abuse allegations were true.
It wasn’t until 10 years later, in 2003, that Jackson was formally booked on molestation charges. He was formally indicted on ten counts ranging from extortion to molestation.
Throughout this entire ten-year period and beyond, Jackson never once strayed in his claim of innocence, consistently maintaining the argument that he never once molested, extorted, or abused children.
His case went to trial in 2005, where he was formally acquitted on all charges, yet many still believe him to have been guilty all along.
While Michael Jackson died at the age of 50 in 2009, the accusations against him never faltered. In the period between 2013 and 2014, civil suits were filed against his estate with the claim that Jackson had molested and abused the plaintiff. The case was later dropped in 2015.
While investigations turned up probable cause throughout the years, there was never sufficient evidence to gain a conviction, something that still sparks ongoing debate 16 years after his death.
Now I’m not saying he’s either guilty or innocent. As the victims, the claims of the children should be considered and not cast aside simply because of Jackson’s fame. However, I do believe it’s worth considering how Michael Jackson, as a man, has been commonly misunderstood throughout the entirety of his life.
Michael Jackson had struggled socially as a result of childhood traumas. The spotlight, for him as a child star in the 1960s, was extremely isolating. His paranoia grew, as did the scrutiny regarding his physical appearance. Most of all, he carried trauma following an abusive upbringing.
His abusive childhood led to his social immaturity and insecurity well into his adult years. He was often described as “naive” or “childlike,” perhaps as a result of his inner child never having been free in his childhood.
This could have led him to see and understand things differently, especially when considering certain situations or relationships with children. What we may think is inappropriate or socially unacceptable may seem entirely normal to Jackson, such as the controversial topic of him, as an adult, having shared a bed with a child, a situation that much of his controversy has stemmed from. Not only that, but he owned Neverland Ranch, his property that contained a private amusement park, zoo, etc, where he often hosted children.
Neverland Ranch was his form of recreating the childhood that he had missed, and was an opportunity for him to share it with others. Though, unfortunately, the ranch was central to the allegations against him. Many children came and went from his ranch, including child stars such as Emmanuel Lewis, Macaulay Culkin, Tatum O’Neal, and Brett Barnes, all of whom were close friends of Michael Jackson and have denied any abuse or wrongdoing.
Most recently, with the release of more documents of the Epstein files and Jackson’s appearance in them, the argument arose that Jackson was often present and utilized Neverland Ranch in order to protect the children from Jeffrey Epstein.
We may never know what occurred between him and the children, or what occurred at the Neverland Ranch, but it’s important, as with any case, to consider all angles, especially in a case as controversial and heavily debated as this one
