Nearly three weeks since her possible abduction, Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, remains to be found. It’s a tragic situation.
The 84-year-old woman is missing, and I certainly cannot imagine what Savannah Guthrie, other close relatives, and friends are currently experiencing.
But every abduction and every murder is tragic.
The media, both the news and social media, are so hyper-focused on this case that they’re deaf to the other tragedies occurring. Take the atrocities committed by ICE agents, for example.
The coverage of the atrocities that ICE agents have been committing has lessened. The news is now hyper-focused on Nancy Guthrie.
It’s not that the ICE protests have stopped. It’s that they aren’t being covered nearly as much as they were when Alex Pretti and Renee Good were murdered.
I know I’ve personally heard and seen more about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance in recent weeks than I have about any other news story, whether that be a story about ICE, Trump, or the Epstein case. Her possible abduction is overshadowing other media.
I sympathize with both her and the family. But why is her case getting so much traction when there are abductions and murders every day that go without the extensive media coverage?
Others are forgotten, regardless of pleas from family and friends, while Nancy Guthrie remains one of the media’s current highlights even three weeks after what the police are calling an abduction.
According to the World Population Review, there are 6.5 missing persons for every 100,000 people. That’s missing persons alone, whether they’re runaways or abductions. That’s not even including murder cases.
What makes the Guthrie case stand out, however, is the fact that it’s a high-profile case.
Because Nancy Guthrie’s daughter is a co-host on the Today show, they’ve captured the media spotlight.
Savannah Guthrie’s desperate pleas for her mother’s return can be seen everywhere. They have access to the media, and because of that spotlight, there was immediate action by police and near-immediate involvement from the FBI.
