Politics Today: Big Money

It is no secret that politicians accept cooperation donations to fund their campaigns. With all of the media that is out there for politicians to utilize, promoting your name starts to become a huge financial commitment. This has been the practice for years. If you want to be president you need to get on television, you need to be sponsored by your party; you need flyers, signs and other forms of self-promotional propaganda. And unless you are Donald Trump you probably can’t afford to self-finance your campaign.

Until this election I had never questioned this fact. It just seemed to be the thing to do. But then I sat down and really thought about it. After much contemplation I have come to the conclusion that this is a system that we really should not be using.

When we vote for a politician we are putting our full confidence in that person. We are showing that we believe that person is the one person who can get the job done. However how do we find out about these politicians? How do we know we want to vote for them? We vote because we see these advertisements and believe they can do the job.

It is because of big money that we see these ads. Big money has a huge hand in everything we do. The capitalist system tells us what we want to buy and what we want to consume. Politicians and products are not much different in this way. Big money pays for commercials, we see them and we consume their products. Big money pays for politician, they then put up ad, we see them and we vote for them.

The problem with this is that this means that Politicians aren’t really listening to their constituents. The real people they listen to are the big corporations that pay for their campaigns. Big corporations have the government right in their pocket and they have for years.

But what does this mean in the grand scheme of things. Well, it means that we don’t have as much of a Democracy as we thought. What we are living in right now is a thing called an Oligarchy. An Oligarchy is a system of government where a few people control and own the government. This might sound like an extreme, but just think about it. Right now we have a government that is mostly controlled by Republicans. Republicans are notorious for treating corporations like people. They are for the wealthy and not the common man. They try to push for laws and policies that will help their sponsors not exactly the people.

It also works in other ways too. If you look at social media most Democrats say that Bernie Sanders is winning the primaries so far. However if you look at CNN and other news related sites they all say that Hillary Clinton is ahead. So why is there a disconnect between what people are saying and what is being advertised on television?

This is because Time Warner is Clinton’s seventh highest donor for her campaign. Time Warner is the company that controls CNN. People like Sanders however people are also easily leaded. If they see that Clinton is ahead then they will go ahead and vote for her because she is the better bet according to the media.

I personally don’t think that corporations should be allowed to donate. Corporations are not people. People should support politicians, not businesses. I think if we want to go back to a true Democracy we should eliminate the ability for corporations to donate any funds to political campaigns.
