Kim Davis vs. The LGBTQ Community

Kim Davis vs. The LGBTQ Community

On September 8th, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis was released from jail after serving five days behind bars for denying marriage licenses to four couples in June. Two of these couples were homosexual, and after denying these couples their licenses Davis decided to bar two heterosexual couples from getting theirs. All four couples filed a lawsuit on July 1st against her. In August, David L. Burning, the federal judge in charge of her case, issued a stay that temporarily barred Davis from denying marriage license requests. Davis continued to defy this order, saying that she was acting under “God’s authority.” Now let it be known that Davis has been married four times. Was that under God’s authority as well?

Why not just fire her? Well here’s a fun fact: Davis must resign or be voted out in order for the state to be rid of her. She obviously isn’t resigning anytime soon. That leaves the state with one choice: vote her out. There’s only one problem: Kentucky State Congress is currently on a three month long break and will not be back in session until January. Which means there is no way to vote her out. She’s going to be denying county marriage licenses for at least 3 more months. So to the young (or old) couples of Rowan County, I suggest moving or getting your licenses elsewhere.

Sadly, Davis has many people supporting her decision, such as the Republican 2016 presidential candidates. That in itself is not a surprise; I would’ve been confused if they didn’t support her. But not to worry, she also has people who do not support her (including me.) Planting Peace, a group that focuses on humanitarian issues such as LGBTQ rights, paid to put up a very large billboard in Davis’ hometown of Morehead, Kentucky. The billboard reads, “Dear Kim Davis, the fact that you can’t sell your daughter for three goats and a cow means we’ve already redefined marriage.” Planting Peace explained that the intent of the billboard “was to expose this narrow interpretation by Davis and others that they use to defend their discrimination against the LGBTQ community.” The billboard is the perfect slap in the face for those like Davis who choose to interpret the bible to suit their own means.

Along with the chance of her losing her job come January, she must also worry about another lawsuit. Survivor, the group that created Eye of the Tiger, is suing Davis for millions for using their song when she walked out of jail. Thank you, Survivor, for taking advantage of her mistake.

Honestly, the whole problem isn’t that she’s denying same-sex couples their marriage licenses (even though that is a large part of it); the problem is that she’s going against the law to do so. Going against such a large and recently Constitution-approved law is a giant blow against the Supreme Court. If Kim Davis is not fired come January, who’s to say that there will not be more like her who blatantly ignore the law? If this continues, the gay rights movement, and possibly other civil rights movements, will be back to square one, and I refuse to let one woman ruin all that we have worked for when it comes to equality. Kim Davis is just another obstacle to face on the path towards equality, and I know that she and her followers will not be tolerated for much longer. Kim Davis will be punished, if not by the law, then by others. Survivor has already taken the first punch.
