Politics Today: Kim Davis

Probably the biggest hubbub lately has been the Kim Davis situation. Davis, whose job was to give out marriage licenses, was preventing all couples from getting marriage licenses. After weeks of these shenanigans law enforcement finally decided to step in and arrested her for not following constitutional law. She spent five days in jail for being in contempt of the court. On Sept. 8 she was released and gave a small speech while dancing out to “Eye of the Tiger.” The conditions of her release were that she would not interfere with marriage licenses being granted to any couple. Many Republican candidates have backed her up saying that everyone needs to stand up for religious freedom.

Where should I begin? This summer the ruling was passed that all people could get married regardless of gender. This is not just a law. This was a change to our constitution. Our constitution is the most binding document in our country. All other laws and states must look to this constitution before they change. It is a fact. To break this law is to go against the fabric of our country. She literally went against the fabric of our country, and she is walking free.

The only reason she is a free woman right now is because her office is giving out the licenses now. Not her. Her lawyer has even said that he can neither confirm nor deny if she will continue to hinder homosexual couples from getting licenses. I would almost guarantee once she gets back in that office she will go right back to it. She basically just got a swat on the wrist.

While homosexuality might be against her religion it is not against the law. Since she works in public office she has to serve them as readily as she would any heterosexual couple. It is her job and as an elected official she needs to follow the law.

She claims that she is being prosecuted for her religious beliefs. No; she is being prosecuted for her prejudice getting in the way of the law. There is no way you can spin this in her favor. She broke the law and she should have to pay the price. I am honestly disgusted that just because of the big hubbub that she has inspired she is being released.

But hey at least the writer of “Eye of the Tiger” is considering suing her for using his song without a license. Isn’t that ironic.
