Let’s Talk About Zoe Quinn

If you’re into video games, you’ve probably heard of Zoe Quinn. According to a lot of people on the Internet, Quinn is singlehandedly ruining video game journalism with her vagina, which is remarkable, considering she exclusively works on indie games that most people will never play.

Here’s what went down: Quinn has a douchebag of an ex-boyfriend. This sorry excuse for a man posted personal details of their relationship, along with nude photos of Quinn, all over the internet on various gaming forums. On top of that, he also accused her of sleeping with journalists for favorable reviews of her games.

Somehow, this was enough for a witch-hunt. Despite the fact that every accusation has been proven to be false, people all over the web have been harassing Quinn, sending her death and rape threats and accusing her of everything from destroying journalistic integrity within the gaming community to singlehandedly bringing down charities (I wish I were kidding).

The most disgusting part is that Quinn’s ordeal is not an isolated incident. Anita Sarkeesian (of Tropes Vs Women fame) recently fled her home after death threats were made against her. Her crime? She has a web series that scrutinizes sexism in video games. Apparently that’s worth bomb threats, death threats, and rape threats. Jennifer Hepler quit her job as a writer for Bioware after death threats were made against her family. Don’t worry, she deserved it; she was head writer on Dragon Age 2, and the people threatening her didn’t like the writing. For contrast, the male head writer of Mass Effect 3 (which received a ton of criticism for its ending) never had to worry about strangers on the internet threatening to rape and kill him.

Gaming culture has a huge problem and these women are not it. The blatant misogyny among gamers shows that hatred against women is not a minority. Women who play games worry about harassment in multiplayer (check out Fat, Slutty or Ugly for examples), and women who work in the industry have to fear for their safety.

Not cool.
