Super Bowl commercials aren’t what they used to be

This weekend was the NFL’s Super Bowl XLVIII, which pitted the Seattle Seahawks against the Denver Broncos. To the surprise of many, including myself, it was a major upset with the Seahawks destroying the Broncos with a score of 43 to eight.

Usually many would say “Oh, that’s okay. At least the commercials were funny!” As it turned out, that was not the case. I found the Super Bowl commercials, which are typically either stupidly hilarious or witty, were really lacking this year. There were some good ones, some that remind us where we come from and some where you just asked yourself “What in the world were they thinking?”

Some of my favorites included the Jaguar villains, John Stamos’ yogurt commercial and the Budweiser dog/horse commercial.

In the Jaguar commercial, it showed some of our favorite British villains – Sir Ben Kingsley, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Strong racing off in different types of Jaguar vehicles–or in Hiddleson’s case, a helicopter.

They begin with the question “Ever wonder why all Hollywood villains are played by Brits?” The three actors go on to say things such as “we sound proper…have an eye for detail…hunger for power…have a certain style…” all which can be related, in my opinion, back to the actual idea of the Jaguar car in general. Although this commercial was more of a fangirl moment for me, seeing all my favorite villains together, it really made me want a Jaguar. And it certainly made villainy look awfully appealing.

The second commercial I vividly remember includes every woman’s favorite family man, John Stamos, in another infamously steamy yogurt commercial. But what’s this? He’s not only accompanied by another beautiful woman, but by his former “Full House” costars, Bob Saget and David Alan Coulier. The two unintentionally drive off Stamos’ woman by demanding him to remove his pants so they can the clean the dropped yogurt off of them. This was another fangirl moment seeing the cast of my favorite childhood television show back on air again.

The third and final commercial, which I believe was one of the best this year, was Budweiser’s dog and horse commercial. Budweiser is famous for creating cute and memorable Super Bowl commercials with their Clydesdale horses, however, this year one of their Clydesdales had a little friend, one of the cutest little golden retriever puppies. They live a happy life, with the puppy always getting in shenanigans trying to get out of the barn to visit. I won’t give the ending away, but it has such a heartwarming ending that even you Broncos fans will smile.

There were other commercials of course, ones that made us proud of where were came from—like Coca-Cola’s “America” commercial and Monsanto’s Blue Mound commercial—and others where we just sat and wondered what the makers were thinking, such as the Butterfingers’ peanut butter commercial. Overall, comparing to previous years, I found the commercials very disappointing. I can see why Bruce Willis may need that hug he were talking about after this year’s Super Bowl.
