After a successful school year, the School of Theatre and Dance (SOTAD) teams up with Millikin’s School of Music and the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra to perform their rendition of Cinderella.
Cinderella, translated from Cendrillon, was originally composed by French composer Pauline Viardot in 1904 and later translated by Rachel M. Harris. While there are many different versions of the opera, this three-act, one hour operetta is considered to be a much more lighthearted rendition of the timeless tale.
The story follows Cendrillon through her servant-like treatment by her sisters and father, but with the help of her Fairy Godmother, she attends the ball and catches the eye of the Prince, uniting the two.
The cast and crew of Cinderella have been hard at work in rehearsals, preparing for the weekend of performances ahead. This cast features not only SOTAD students, but students from the School of Music. Upon the stage we’ll find Sarah Semon as Cindrillon, Jack Fokkens as Prince, Morgan Reckamp as La Fee, Micah Gabriel as Pictordu, Callie Francis as Maguelonne, Bella Crank as Armelinde, and Cyrus Ditch as Barigoule. Not only that, but Amanda D’Lacoste, Lance Fredrick, Theo Gal, Jeremiah Leslie, Evelyn Reed, Ashley Robinson, Leon Simmons, and Kamaya Yarber will all perform as part of the ensemble alongside Sydney Alexander-Brown and Alida Fredrickson in the auxiliary chorus.
Every other year, Millikin’s opera program comes together to perform a fully-staged opera in the spring semester, alongside a live orchestra featuring Millikin music students as well as members of the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra.
There is a lot of work that goes into putting on these shows, and without the collaboration of students and the greater Millikin community, this would not be possible.
Directed by Aubrey Hawkinson and guest-conducted by John Massaro, this French-to-English translation will be performed on May 1st and 2nd at 7:30 p.m. as well as May 3rd at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Rogers Theatre.
You can purchase tickets for $25 at kirklandfinearts.com or by calling (217)-424-6318. Otherwise, tickets can be purchased by Millikin students for free using their Millikin ID two hours prior to each performance.
In collaboration, the cast, crew, and musicians worked tirelessly to bring this opera to the Virginia Rogers’ stage so be sure to snag your tickets while you can, and come out and support your fellow Millikin students and community while you have the chance.
