Millikin Sports Update

As the winter sports are nearing the end, the spring sports are getting ready for action.

Let’s take a look back at last week’s events.

The basketball seasons have come to an end. Although the men’s and women’s team did not post a record that is up to their standards, they did end the season on a high note.

For the men, they ended the season with a home win against North Park University. The women were not as fortunate, as they fell in their season ender.

Both teams did end the season with awards for members of their team. The men had two players receive awards. Senior Elijah Henry was named to the 2019 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin All-Conference Second Team. Freshman Calvin Fisher was named the CCIW Freshman of the Year.

On the women’s side, it was senior Yanni Sadler and sophomore Jordan Hildebrand earning honors. Sadler was selected Saddler was selected to the All-Conference First Team. Hildebrand was selected to the  All-Conference Second Team.

After finishing second in the CCIW Championship, the wrestling team is gearing up for the NCAA Division III Lower Midwest Regional. Millikin’s three returning All-Americans, Chris Williams, Bradan Birt and Keajion Jennings, will be competing in this Regional. Williams ranks third in the country with a 10-1 record on the season. Williams also the CCIW title at 141.  Bradan Birt ranks seventh nationally at 157 pounds. Jennings currently ranks fifth at 197 pounds with a 22-3 record. Sophomore Tristan Birt and senior Austin Hedrick will be competing as well. Birt, at 149. Hedrick, at 174.

The men’s and women’s track teams opened competition in the CCIW Championships. Friday was a big day for Millikin, as five athletes and two relay teams earned All-Conference Honors.

Freshman Charlize Pate finished sixth in the Pentathlon with a school record 2,808 points.

The girl’s relay team consisted of Mackenzie Dixon, Maddy Eck, Morgan Powers and Victoria Mineo. The team finished in third in the Distance Medley Relay in 12:48.99.

Sophomore Brea Blackwell finished in sixth place in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.26 meters (17-3.25).

Alexis Obermeyer finished in seventh place in the Weight Throw at 14.83 meters (48-8).

The men had a nice showing as well. Freshman Marshun Hart finished in fourth place in the Long Jump at 6.75 meters (22-1.75). His jump was the eighth best jump in school history.

Freshman Aeon Johnson was fourth in the Weight Throw with a toss of 15.63 meters (51-3.50).

The men’s relay team consisting of Ben Kuxmann, Ethan Meyer, TJ Weglarz and William Powell, finished in fourth in the Men’s Distance Medley Relay in 10:43.15.

After the first day of competition, the men found themselves in sixth place, while the women finished in seventh.

The Millikin men’s tennis team scored two 9-0 victories at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Millikin’s Jacob Palley, Colin Sandgren, Greg Schwoeppe, Logan Bennett, Holden Owens and Nick Laramee each scored two singles victories. Millikin is now 3-2 on the season.

Spring is almost here, so that means so is baseball and softball.

Softball will start in March, but baseball is underway. The team dropped its’ opening games to Hendrix College. They will have another chance to get in the winning column, come March.
