At the Movies with Kyline Humm: Too Many Girls

2 out of 5 stars

After popular reception on Broadway, Too Many Girls, was produced into a movie in 1940. It may be a flash from the past, but the 1940 RKO Radio Pictures movie was produced with stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. They were a creative casting choice, but in my opinion, the only great relationship throughout the movie. The film has a basic plot of the young, wild daughter of a very wealthy man who wants to go the college of her dreams and live a normal life. As daddy is the big man on campus, no pun intended, he decides to also send a group of all-American football players, who in turn become his daughter’s bodyguards while she is at school. Lucille Ball plays Connie and is the spoiled daughter who always gets her way. At least, she gets her way until her father out smarts her and the all-American football players are used as body guards while she attends college. While the bodyguards attend college they are allowed to play for the school and help them win. As soon as they start playing for the college team, the team begins to have success. The reason why her dad wants her protected or watched? Because he is being over protective and believes there is an alternative reason as to why she is attending Pottawatornie.

Overall, this movie was okay. I was suspecting something more intense or interesting, but the only thing I found likable was the relationship between Connie (Lucille Ball) and her bodyguards. There were some laughs and some parts they really dragged on, but it was nicely put together for a film made in the 1940s.
