Recently, the trailer for Supergirl was released, giving fans an extensive look at the upcoming film. Lots of details and plot information were revealed, leaving many fans anxiously awaiting the final film’s release.
This movie will be based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which follows Supergirl across the galaxy assisting an alien named Ruthye to get revenge against Krem of the Yellow Hills for the murder of her father.
Instead of facing or dealing with the trauma she carries, Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, travels across the galaxy to party and gets drunk to distract herself from her deep emotions.
The film is likely to adapt the themes of trauma, loss, survivor’s guilt, and loneliness from the book.
The trailer opens with a message for Supergirl (Kara Zor-EL) from none other than David Corenswet’s Superman. Superman wants Kara to spend more time on Earth to find her people, while Kara is sure she has no people there.
Kara, like Superman, was from Krypton. While Superman was a baby when Krypton was destroyed, Kara was old enough to remember much more, making the destruction of her home planet have a greater impact on who she is as a character.
We see glimpses of Kara and Krypto on Krypton, suggesting we could learn more about Krypton’s origin and the corruption of Superman’s parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, but, more importantly, about Kara’s past trauma of witnessing her planet, along with everything she loves, perish.
A lot of clips showKara partying and being around Krypto, whom she says is all she has.
A moment is shown in which Kara is in an escape pod, being ejected as Krypton is destroyed.
Krypto is shot by a villain carrying a deadly virus, and it is revealed that he has 3 days to live. This already makes the movie’s plot very heavy and emotional, as the movie will likely be Supergirl having to go on an intergalactic adventure to find a cure for her dog, the only remaining piece of home she has.
This is very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, in which Rocket Raccoon is mortally wounded, leading the Guardians to confront his past trauma as they save him on an intergalactic adventure.
We see a little girl talking about Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who murdered her family, who are a big part of the book this movie will be based on. This character speaking is almost certainly Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley.
We see Supergirl bring her to a bar, where she gets into a fight, and we then see Jason Momoa’s Lobo.
Lobo is shown in the teaser for a split second, but here we get a way better look at the character. Lobo looks very accurate to the comics version, and it is great to see Momoa finally play the character after years of fan-casting.
It seems the movie will tackle themes of revenge much like the book, as Supergirl is heard saying that revenge won’t take pain away, most certainly referring to Ruthye and her hatred towards Krem of the Yellow Hills and what they did to her family.
Overall, Supergirl looks like a great film. I am very excited to see how they adapt Kara’s past trauma and how that will play into her saving Krypto. The themes and plot are set up well enough to be a guaranteed hit, but we will have to see when the film releases in theatres on June 26th
