Millikin Expected to Hire Scherer

After Matt Nadelhoffer’s resignation in February, Millikin has been searching for a new face to head the men’s basketball team on campus. Today, they have finally found their guy. After narrowing it down to Tom Jessee, the head assistant coach at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and former Elmhurst College coach Mark Scherer, they made their decision.

Mark Scherer will be taking the reins for the Millikin team that had a record of just 3-22 last season. Scherer spent seventeen years at the head of the Elmhurst program before retiring in 2013 to relocate to Eureka, Illinois to be with his family full time.

While at Elmhurst, he led them to their first CCIW championship in 2001. The same year, the team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and he was named the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Coach of the Year and the Division II Coach of the Year by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He holds Elmhurst coaching records for career victories with an overall record of 245-189, career winning percentage (.564), and single-season victories with 22.

He produced winning records in 10 of his 17 seasons, totaling 32 all-conference players and five All-Americans. Returners for the Millikin squad will meet Coach Scherer for the first time at 5:00 today.
