2016 Halloween Percussion Concert

This year, the Millikin Percussion Ensemble  held its tenth annual Halloween concert.  Like always, it will be a family-friendly concert and is meant for all ages.

The Millikin Percussion Ensemble has performed this concert in the Albert-Taylor Theatre every year because it’s haunted. This is the very same theatre that the infamous Rail Girl calls home, haunting over others’ performances.

The concert is free for Millikin students if they have their student I.D.’s and is $8 for non-Millikin students. The concert starts on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Albert-Taylor Theatre and will go until Saturday, Oct. 29. Friday’s show starts at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday’s at 8:00 p.m.

Not only will there be a chilling performance by the ensemble, there will also be a costume contest. The ensemble will dressed up in their best Halloween costumes, and the audience will get to choose the winner for best costume.

Sophomore music education major Alex Bravos won best costume in the concert last year for his Austin Powers outfit. He was truly a crowd favorite. Incoming freshman commercial music major Frankie Paredes revealed that he was going to try to be a character named Eren from Attack on Titan.

Paredes will be playing keyboard and auxiliary percussion, and he’s really excited to play a piece called “Trio Per Uno” by Nebojsa Zivkovic.  “It’s a loud, fast, and intense piece with multiple percussion instruments. It’s really fun to perform,” Paredes said. Sophomore math education major Krystal Reyes will be playing marimba and one very unorthodox instrument: Cheerios. “I think this one will be the best Halloween concert yet. We’re taking the best of the best songs from our past 10 concerts to make this concert phenomenal,” Reyes said.

Other than keyboard and auxiliary percussion, marimba, and Cheerios, the ensemble will also be using brooms. Junior music education major Kaream Williams is particularly excited by this prospect. “I really like the broom piece we are playing. It brings theater in with percussion which is fun,” Williams said. Williams, Reyes, and Paredes are very excited to have a fun and energetic show. It will definitely be a spectacle. If you’re not doing anything Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night, come on over to the Albert-Taylor Theatre and support the Millikin Percussion Ensemble. You won’t want to miss it!
