130 people injured in demonstrations in Bosnia-Herzegovina

BBC News reports that hundreds of people were injured in demonstrations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The protests started over the high unemployment rates in the capital Sarajevo. The protest escalated to the burning of government buildings when the people felt their cries weren’t being heard by their politicians.

Police forces tried to subdue the protesters using rubber bullets and tear gas. According to the BBC reports, protesting continued in the town Tuzla where 130 people were injured. The unrest in Tuzla was initially sparked when a major factory that employed most of the town shut down. Much of the unrest in Bosnia-Herzegovina is due to the high unemployment rate. The BBC report states that 40 percent of Bosnians are currently unemployed.

A man on a plane headed for Turkey tried to divert the plane towards Sochi, where the 2014 Winter Olympics are held. It was released that the Ukrainian man’s goal was to release prisoners in his own country. The man who attempted to hijack said he would blow up the plane if they did not meet his demands. According to the Voice of America’s report, Maxim Lenko of the Ukrainian Security Service said the man broke into the cockpit of the plane and stated he wanted the course of the plane to be changed to Sochi. The man was eventually calmed and restrained and was taken into custody when the plane landed in Istanbul. VOA reports there were no explosives found on the plane.
