China to make changes in favor of human rights

Relaxation in the “one child” law in China is going to give families much more freedom. The push for this right has been promoted in the past few months, CNN reports, along with a number of similar human issues. CNN also reports that the biggest change being made in favor of human rights is the abolishment of “re-education through labor.”

This program set up in the 50s allowed counterrevolutionaries to be charged with crimes and punished for them without a trial. The brutal program caused millions of deaths from the 50s to 70s when the system was reformed. It’s believed that millions of people died from overwork, suicide, and poor conditions in the first 20 years of the program. CNN reports that it is believed that some 190,000 people are currently in the system.

In addition to the abolishment of “re-education through labor,” China has also stated they will be more selective with distributing the death penalty.

The “one child” law says that couples living in cities must both prove they are only children in order to be permitted to have a second child. CNN reports there will be some changes in this law. Now parents seeking to have two children will only have to prove one of them comes from a family with just one child. The changes in the policy were met with positive comments from the general public in China.

Huge bust saves 386 children

Some 348 people from around the world have been arrested on counts of child pornography. This massive movement in protecting children from the child porn industry has resulted in 386 children being rescued, according to ABC News. The numbers show that 108 people from Canada, 76 from the USA, and the remaining 164 from other countries were caught and arrested. The Toronto police force is calling this one of the biggest busts they have ever had.

The bust began with the arrest of Brian Way, who was in charge of a child pornography distribution company. When police searched his house, they found nearly 1,000 pieces of evidence against Way. These pieces included items such as computers, dvds, dvd burners, and an editing studio, ABC reports. Through international cooperation since 2010 this bust was a large success and saved many children from being exploited. Way is being charged with some 24 counts, including the charging of his “company” as a criminal organization. The investigation is still ongoing and more arrests are hoped to be made.
