Leggings for men: Introducing meggings

On Millikin’s campus male students are frequently seen wearing jeans or sweatpants in this cold weather, not leggings. However, a USA Today article has asked the question, “Are meggings coming to everyday men’s fashion?”

Just like jeggings are the name of leggings that are made with a jean-like material, and sometimes seen with a button or zipper, “meggings” are spandex leggings made for men. The NY Daily News says that meggings were first launched in December in Chicago, Ill. by Adam Freck and Andrew Volk of Meggings Man Clothing. Meggings have even been called the next step in the direction of skinny jeans.

According to USA Today’s interview with Freck, he said, “The leggings are modified to better suit the ‘male physique,’ featuring a faux zipper and a triangular insert along the hip and outer thighs to allow more room in the ‘front area of the man.’”

ABC News met up with H&M in New York to give the look a try. Four of the six men that participated did not feel comfortable wearing the meggings out and about. One even said that “they make [him] nervous.”

Will Welch, senior editor of GQ Magazine, weighed in on meggings. Welch said that he thought that the way American men wear their clothing is too baggy and that they are starting to wear clothes that actually fit them again. He said that men should not wear meggings, but ABC News said that designers think that men will start to wear them.

Meggings have already appeared on high-fashion runway shows and endorsed by celebrities like Russell Brand, Lenny Kravtiz and Justin Bieber. Along with the originating store Meggings Man Clothing, American Apparel and Urban Outfitters are offering meggings. Currently the sizes for meggings range from medium to extra-large and a customer has a choice of fourteen different styles in the Meggings Man Clothing collection. Some of these styles include black basic, maroon basic, gold metallic, American flag, checkered and more.

Meggings Man Clothing’s main focus for now is meggings, but is planning on adding to their brand more as 2014 progresses.
