April 22nd is a day to celebrate our planet. Since 1970, Earth Day, has become an annual day for the world to come together and demonstrate support for the earth and the environmental protection of it. It’s a day to raise awareness about combating climate change, promoting sustainability, and protecting our one and only Earth.
In light of this day of celebration, Millikin’s own Symphonic Wind Ensemble is set to perform a concert titled “Our Power, Our Planet,” to not only show their support of the Earth, but to celebrate all that it offers.
On Saturday, April 18th, the bands will take to the stage of Kirkland Fine Arts Center (KFAC), featuring a performance by the local Rochester High School, directed by Chris Gunn, followed by the Millikin Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Neal Smith.
This program will feature a lineup of songs, all of which tell one of Earth’s many stories.

Music is meant to tell a tale, to allow listeners to envision something beyond sight. What better use of that than to tell a story about our Earth?
From the harsh winter storms to the sweet spring days, the erupting volcanos and the singing of the birds, these instruments give us the ability to not only hear, but to feel that through the music.
Millikin’s Wind Ensemble is set to play David Maslanka’s “Mother Earth,” Kevin Charoensri’s “Regeneration,” and Frank Ticheli’s “Vesuvius.” Additionally, MSWE will welcome guest soloist Amanda Pond, Millikin’s own instructor of flute, on Jules Mouquet’s piece, “Le Flute de Pan.”
Each one of these songs was picked because of the story they tell and their ability to draw emotions from those who listen. From sweet lyrical melodies to vengeful and rage-filled rhythms, this performance is sure to make an impact on all who attend.
Millikin’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Rochester High School Band will take to Kirkland’s stage at 7:30 on Saturday, April 18th.
This is your opportunity to celebrate our Earth, not only by listening to a long-practiced performance but to remind yourself as to why it’s so important to understand and appreciate the efforts in protecting the environment as well as our beautiful planet.
Tickets can be purchased online for $12 or in-person at Kirkland’s ticket office prior to the performance. Tickets will be discounted for Millikin faculty, students, and veterans.
