Summer Movie Review

The Summer Box Office was full of successes, flops and mega blockbusters. The official start to the summer movie season starts in May. This May, started out the sequel to the one of the highest grossing movies ever, The Avengers. The Avengers: Age of Ultron slightly underperformed its predecessor. The first film made $623,357,910 at the box office, Age of Ultron only made $457,494,254. However, the film was still a wide success.

May also brought us flops such as Hot Pursuit, which made $34,580,201, Poltergeist, which made $47,425,125 and Aloha, which made a mere $21, 067,116. May had a few blockbusters other than Ultron. Pitch Perfect 2, Mad Max: Fury Road and San Andreas all grossed over $100,000,000 domestically at the box office. The Disney syfy flick Tomorrowland was just shy of that with $93,107,410.

June was a month of indescribable feats for the box office when a little movie that was a sequel to Jurassic Park made over $6 billion dollars. Jurassic World was by far the most successful film of the summer bringing in $640,872,800 and becoming the third most successful movie of all time. Just behind Titanic and Avatar. The film is still playing in theatres and could beat Titanic for the number two slot. Disney and Pixar made their return to big screen after a one-year hiatus with Inside Out.

Inside Out and Jurassic World were the two most successful films of the summer. Inside Out is currently the only Disney/ Pixar film to not debut at number one at the box office. The film eventually became number one after two weeks in theatres. Inside Out is currently being buzzed about for the Oscar’s Best Picture Award. If it were to win, it would be the only animated film to win that title. We will have to wait until the nominees are announced later this year to see if Inside Out will be a frontrunner at the awards show. Another blockbuster film released in June was Spy, a Melissa McCarthy comedy. The Flops in June were Entourage, Max and the sequel to a former blockbuster hit, Ted 2.

July brought some more hits such as Minions, Ant-Man, and Trainwreck and Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation. Each of those films made over $100,000,000 domestically. But July was mainly full of flops other than those films. The Gallows, Paper Towns, Vacation, Self/Less and Pixels were some of the worst reviewed and were not successful at the box office. Minions made a ton of money and were pretty much everywhere this summer. That’s because the studio spent $600 million in marketing in the film. Minions took over everywhere from McDonald’s, Amazon and General Mills. You couldn’t go anywhere without seeing them!

August only had one stand out movie, Straight Outta Compton. Compton has dominated the Box office since it came out three weeks ago.

With all of the excitement dying down with this summer, Summer 2015 truly gave us some great films and made us look forward to next year!
