Movie Review: The Monuments Men

Recently, the major motion picture The Monuments Men released, and is receiving a ton of hype both good and bad. This film was spectacular, even with the cast of actors who are geared more towards comedic roles. This historic tale, which takes place during World War II, is brought to life by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman and Bob Balaban. George Clooney wrote the screenplay with Grant Heslov and they adapted the film from the book by Robert Edsel.

Through reviews and critic feedback, most fans who watched the film say it is a “GO” (Fandango). This film is based on the true story of one of the greatest treasure hunts in history. The platoon that is portrayed in the film, is a platoon put together by FDR. Their goals; to get into Germany, rescue the artistic masterpieces that were stolen/hidden by the Nazis, and return those masterpieces to their rightful owners.

Even though it received mixed reviews, I highly recommend it. Millikin University Senior Drew Burge said “I thought it was a really good movie. It was really interesting to see John Goodman in a serious role.” Even though the film received a majority of good reviews, the only downside is that George Clooney struggled to fit in all that he needed into the time he had for the film. Many of the characters had great stories of their own to tell and Clooney hardly scratched the surface of those characters. Overall, the storyline was great and it told the message of those few men who had such an important task to achieve during the war. It was interesting seeing the high profile comedy actors in serious roles and many of them voiced in their personal interviews that they wanted to be a part of this film to give tribute to the incredible men and tell of their extraordinary victory.
