Video Game Review: Star Wars Battlefront II

As the new Star Wars Battlefront comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and for PC on November 17th, it only seems right to discuss the best Star Wars Battlefront created- Star Wars Battlefront II. It does not even begin to compare to the first Star Wars Battlefront, and from what we’ve seen in the Beta of Star Wars Battlefront III, the new Battlefront cannot compete to that of Battlefront II.

It was given 4/5 stars on Metacritic and 9/10 stars on Steam for obvious reasons. For starters, it offers so much variety. There is single player mode as well as multiplayer mode. In both modes, you can play as rebel soldiers, storm troopers, Jedi, Yeti, and even as ewoks. You can play in “Campaign Mode” which follows a storyline, “Galactic Conquest” where you can fly spaceships in space, and “Instant Action” which puts you directly on the battlefield.

There’s also online multiplayer. So then after you’ve played around for 15 hours by yourself, you are able to show your skills to other people. One reviewer from Steam said, “The improved single-player games are worthwhile enough on their own, but if you can find well connected online matches, multiplayer games will keep you addicted for months.”

Battlefront II’s “Campaign Mode” is titled, Rise of the Empire. In this mode, you go on different missions throughout the galaxy as part of the Galactic Empire’s 501st Legion known as Vader’s Fist. It begins on with an attack on the planet Mygeeto during the Clone Wars and ends with an assault on Hoth just like in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. With a total of eighteen missions, Battlefront II’s “Campaign Mode” can keep you occupied for days.

Battlefront II is the only one of the three Battlefront games that has space battles or “Galactic Conquests”. In space battles, you can simply choose “Conquest” which has you defend your command posts and ship itself while you try to capture your enemy’s command posts and destroy their ships. There’s also “Capture the Flag.” Many players say space battles are the best part of the game simply because it’s believed to be the single greatest space flight simulation game ever.

In “Instant Action”, there are so many amazing stages to play in both single player and multiplayer mode. Some stages that were added that the first Battlefront did not include are even based from Episode III: Revenge of the Sith like Mustafar, Utapau, and Coruscant. Also in “Instant Action” there are many modes to choose from like Hunt mode, Capture the Flag, which is available in 1-flag and 2-flag variants, Hero Assault and Space Assault. It’s a great game if you personally want to get into the battlefields, or in space, to explore and kill rebel scum or some imperials. The background music as well will always keeps you going, especially in the stage Mos Eisley where the infamous “Cantina Song” is played.

Still being played today, Star Wars Battlefront II is a hardcore Star Wars fan’s dream come true. It is everything fans could have ever wanted. If you’re a gamer, it’s an easy game you can put down and pick back up whenever you want. Prepare to spend endless hours playing Battlefront II so you can begin to look forward to Battlefront III, because although it’s nowhere near comparable to Battlefront II, it is definitely worth looking forward to.
