Batman V Superman Reviews Controversy

Despite breaking box office records, Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice is getting hammered by critics and fans alike. Currently sitting at a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes and getting reviews such as 2 out of 5 stars or B- ratings, this shocked many as this movie has a lot of hype building up to it. Many fans also felt disappointed by the movie and took to the internet to give their opinion, even a petition was formed to ban director Zack Snyder from directing the sequel Justice League films.  As a DC Comics fan who did see the movie, I do agree that the movie has many flaws to it and was not what I was expecting. But at the same time are we truly reviewing the movie for what it is or just hammering the film because of its flaws?

A trend I noticed was that when a sequel/reboot film comes out, if it does not meet fan expectations to the letter, the films is typically given incredibly low ratings with people focusing on only the negatives and not making mention of any of the positives. Take 2015’s Terminator Genesis for example, sure the film was not great by any means and soft rebooted a franchise that with an already confusing plot due to constant time travel, but it also has a very low score on Rotten Tomatoes and was given low ratings by critics. But were there some good things to the film? Yes, but will the reviews mention them? For the most part no.

Batman V Superman is the same way, sure I was kind of disappointed by what I got instead of what I was expecting, and if people asked my opinion of the movie I would say “It was kind of bad” but I was able to find things that the movie did right. And I would gladly tell people what it is that the movie did right instead of just acting like the movie made 2015’s Fantastic Four look like The Godfather which is a trend that many of these reviews seemed like.

It seems like when movies such as this come out there are two settings: either it’s the worst movie ever or it’s the greatest movie ever. Usually in fan reviews there is no in between. While some movies are admittedly terrible such as 2015’s Fantastic Four and some movies are admittedly great such as Star Wars The Force Awakens, it is ok to have a movie like 2015’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. that is somewhere in the middle between best movie ever and worst movie ever.  Not every movie made shoots to be as good as The Godfather or Citizen Kane there are some movies where they just try and make a movie, tell a story, and make money. It seems that with Batman V Superman many fans act like it was supposed to be the greatest movie ever and left disappointed by their high expectations.

And while many fans and critics may not have liked this movie that’s not to say that you shouldn’t see it or cannot like it. If you truly are a fan of a certain franchise, then you still should see the movie and make judgement for yourself. Just because the world doesn’t like a certain movie doesn’t mean that you should be forbidden from liking it as well. We live in a time where fans can be more vocal about a film so even though Batman V Superman isn’t a great movie and does a lot of things bad, this doesn’t mean that the studios cannot fix the flaws for the upcoming Justice League movie.
