Straight from Strater: Compromise
It’s an extremely rare occasion when a group of people can come together and collectively agree on a topic. This is a society where almost everyone is divided by some way or another on a topic. We live in a country that is constantly divided by issues such as politics, gun control, race and thousands of other topics. Although it is important to express your individual opinion, it is still important to be able to compromise on topics.
What is wrong with compromise? Personally I feel that we live in a society where no matter what you believe in you want to be completely and totally right. Just look at the way politics are carried out in our society. It is extremely rare to find a politician that wants to reach a compromise on an issue rather than just another lobbyist for the political machine. Furthermore the media also greatly affects our ability to compromise with others. It doesn’t matter if you are a diehard conservative who only watches Fox News or a liberal who focuses only on MSNBC newscasters around the country. In our current society news sources can be also likened to lobbyists, as almost any new source, which focuses on political issues, has a hidden agenda.
These politicians and different media outlets have greatly affected the mentality of our generation. Instead of young people looking for compromise we want what we want, and we do not want to have to compromise our wants to fit the differentiating wants of others. In my opinion the millennial generation are one of the most independent generations that has existed throughout our time. We have been left to conquer extreme social issues such as a poor economy, high unemployment, racial issues, environmental chances and many more. Our society has turned us into an extremely independent and more intelligent generation. Because of this our generation struggles to reach compromise on many of these issues.
Although at times it can be extremely hard to adapt compromise is one of the main ways that we can work to better our society. Our society is constantly divided between varying beliefs, and a divided society cannot stand to conquer issues if we are divided. By compromising we can help advance our wants while also ensuring that others are left unattended to. All though many people see issues as just black or white many of these conflicts can be resolved if we actually open up and listen to what the other person has to say about an issue. Talking over one another is not the solution. This will allow us to have a better handle on their perspective and will allow us to further adapt to others wants. Although compromise can usually be the key to fixing many issues, many people have trouble figuring out how to reach a compromise.
In order to reach a compromise with others the first step is to open up about why you believe a certain way about an issue, while, in turn, listening to what others have to say about an issue, thereby further experiencing their perspective. Furthermore, the next step to reaching a good compromise is to figure out a way where an issue can be resolved that can both satisfy the needs and wishes of both groups.
Although compromise can anger different parties opinions, it is important for others to realize that many issues need to be compromised in order to reach a middle ground, and that, by reaching a compromise, a step has been taken to ensure that both sides of an issue will receive the benefits that they deserve.
