While I said I wasn’t going to talk about Donald Trump anymore in this column, I did want to bring up a certain idea that he has. This idea is one of the backbones of Trump’s campaign. If you have been following his campaign at all you would know what I am talking about. I am talking about the wall. Not the successful Pink Floyd album. No, this is a wall that Trump wants to put up on the border between the United States and Mexico.
He wants this wall to have one big door that would be opened to let masses of people with papers immigrate here. How exactly he plans to coordinate that, I have no idea.
Where do I even want to begin with this issue? First let’s talk about the cost. Trump has been quoted saying that it would take about 5 billion dollars to build this wall. When he talks about it he makes it sound like it is just a small piece of change. However our country is already trillions of dollars in debt. We don’t need to add another 5 billion on top of that.
However the ever thinking Trump has a brilliant idea to fix this. “Just have Mexico pay for it.” While Mexico is in debt to us it would be absolutely ridiculous to ask them to build a wall separating our country from theirs. There is no way that Mexico would ever do it and if we tried to make them do it we would probably start an all-out war. Neither of our countries needs that right now.
Trump thinks that building a wall would be easier than building a skyscraper. I, however disagree. While in theory building a wall would seem easy this task is a lot more difficult than it seems. This proposed wall would have to be 1,954 miles long. The supports and the thickness needed for this wall to be structurally sound would be very difficult to achieve. This would be much harder than he proposes.
Then there is the sheer ridiculousness of there being a wall there in the first place. I understand that illegal immigration has been an issue in our country but there has got to be a better way to fix this issue than putting up a literal wall in between our countries. He doesn’t want to put a wall up in between the United States and Canada so why should we have one in between the United States and Mexico.
The fact of the matter is it just isn’t realistic for there to be a wall separating our countries. Neither of us will want to fund it and neither of us will want to build it. This just isn’t going to happen. Even if the wall was built it would probably not keep out the cartels. These are the people that this wall will really be built to keep out. But these people are so powerful that they will have the money to get past the wall anyways. This wall is a pointless idea and I have no idea why he is still harping on it.
