Straight from Strater: Sophomore Year
Coming back to school is easily one of the most exciting and stressful times that any young adult has to deal with. It is easy to get caught up in all of the excitement that comes with being any year in college. However sophomore year, in my opinion, is one of the most fun times to be a college student, as it puts students right in between being clueless underclassmen and over stressed upperclassmen.
Being a freshman comes with the countless opportunities for discovery, whether it is scholastic or social. As a freshman in college all of these opportunities can be extremely overwhelming, leaving freshman students extremely blindsided and extremely confused. For example, taking a college course for the first time is extremely overwhelming for freshman students. It takes time and evaluation in order to learn how the professor who is teaching the class will act, how bad the homework assignments will be and how frequent the tests, quizzes, and projects are for the class.
Socially being a freshman in college is also extremely difficult. Every college has a certain vibe about how the students act, so it takes incoming students a little more time in order to learn how people act, amongst other discoveries.
Being a sophomore you already have these things down. Instead of worrying continuously about how a class is going to go sophomore students are more concerned with if they are actually going to go to their class or not. Furthermore, socially it is better being a sophomore, as many students have already discovered who their close friends are on campus.
Sophomore year of college is also one of the last years of schooling where there is little stress. During junior year, the option to take time and to really discover a passion for a future career has mostly gone, and students need to be on the right path, making plans for classes that will help them graduate on time, along with figuring out internships for over the summer.
Senior year seems even more confining. Being busy with countless hours of classes, along with the fact that the real world starts as soon as the graduation ceremony is over, is extremely stressful. On top of this, many senior college students will choose to further their education and decide to attend grad school, which can create stress as grad school students need to take a huge test to enter, and it adds on another three years of school.
Sophomore year is incredible. All the knowledge needed to survive in school is already there, while the real world isn’t sneaking up just yet.
