Politics Today: The Presidential Race
If you have been on any form of media this summer then you know that the race for the presidential primaries has been thriving. Last semester I gave an overview on all of the potential candidates. However this week I am going to focus on three: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.
When Hillary first burst into the Democratic scene the millennial generation was enthralled. We were excited to have a chance for a woman president who would be a smart candidate. However as this race has gone on the rose colored glasses have come off and the image of a thinly veiled Democratic Party candidate is all that remains. While she does have her strong points, with the email scandal and her family’s political history I personally don’t think that she will make it past the primary race.
Bernie Sanders on the other hand has been holding the attention of millennials for quite a while. He came from, what seems to be, out of nowhere with ideas that seem like the radical change that many young adults have been looking for. The most interesting thing about his campaign is that one of his policies is against having big business involved in politics and he does not have any huge sponsors. In fact a majority of his funding comes from individuals. I am interested to see where the rest of the Democratic side of the primaries will go.
When it comes to this column I try to be as neutral as I can be in a views column I feel the need to give my whole honest opinion on this final candidate. Donald Trump is a disaster. The Republican Party is heavily weighted this time around since they are trying to replace the Democratic president with one of their own. I do believe that Trump must back down because he is taking away from the integrity of the Republican Party’s race. He is not a politician. He is a celebrity with several racist, sexist and downright ridiculous opinions that have only gotten as much attention as they have because of how outrageous they are. Since he is known as a celebrity he is winning in the polls right now. People are voting for him because of his name not because of what he stands for.
This is the last I will talk about Trump in this column until after the primaries because I believe he has received too much undeserved publicity as it is. From now on I will only talk about candidates who actually have opinions and ideas that are worth noticing, not ridiculous statements that are circulating simply because of shock value. And please, for the love of all that is good in this country, if you are voting in the Republican Primaries, consider voting for a candidate that actually knows what they are doing.
