Not a Trump card

Not a Trump card

The ever present media figure, Donald Trump, is known for a few things- insulting Hispanics, insulting war veterans, insulting women… well, the list goes on. Yet he remains high in the polls and remains on the tongue of every media outlet and the fingers of every blogger. What is it that makes this man with no political background appealing to so many people as a contender for the position of Commander in Chief? He’s certainly connecting with the anger and hatred that a lot of people hold, but where will that anger take us?

Trump doesn’t have much of a platform- perhaps with the exception of planning on making Mexico pay for a wall between our two countries. According to his supporters, Trump’s real appeal is that he doesn’t believe in political correctness. Many of his supporters are the people who are worried that the United States is coddling children (what do you mean we’re not keeping score at a five year olds baseball game?!), or that the media has an unfair narrative (Blacks Lives Matter? How about All Lives Matter?), and a lack of political correctness is tempting to them, the direction perhaps they think the country should be moving in.

I, on the other hand, believe that Trump and many of his supporters are confusing political correctness with common decency. Millikin’s own values seem to reflect things that Trump and his supporters apparently never learned. Things like civil debate, dignity and respect for individuals, integrity and responsibility, and advancement of the greater good.

There is one argument made by the Trump supporters that I certainly can’t argue with- he would shake things up. I can’t imagine how congress would deal with him, or what his State of the Union speeches would be like. Yet for someone who is feeding the fear and hatred of people who don’t look like us, or don’t follow the same religion as us, it’s hard to imagine that his policies would be ones of peace and prosperity for the nation.

The Republican candidates are without a doubt more fun to watch than their democrat counter parts, if only because there are so many of them, but when push comes to shove, I would be honestly floored if Trump received the Republican nomination after alienating so many high ranking members of the party. For now, however, between saying that he would be willing to run as a third party candidate, and giving helicopter rides at the Iowa State Fair, even if I don’t agree with hardly a word he says, he certainly is a riot just to watch.
