With Illinois about to become the 15th state to legalize gay marriage, it’s time to take a moment to do a little victory dance, then remember that there are 35 other states where marriage equality has yet to be a thing. And why isn’t it legal there? What’s so bad about two people who love each other wanting to be able to show it in the same ways straight couples do?
The problem is those people who seem to think that love between two men or two women is squicky and offends their sensibilities. I have a problem with this line of thinking, so I’m going to break it down for you guys: if you don’t support marriage equality, you are either ignorant or you are evil.
Seems kind of harsh, doesn’t it? You probably think I’m being unscrupulous. But sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand and realize that whoever isn’t on your side is the enemy, and right now, anyone actively opposing marriage equality deserves to be in the line of fire.
This isn’t a debate over the debt ceiling, or food stamps, or social security. This is a fight for people’s rights, and the right for two consenting adults to be able to show their love, regardless of what hangs between their legs. Either you’re with us, or you think gay people should be treated like second-class citizens. It’s that simple.
I know. It might be hard for you to imagine two men making love without feeling uncomfortable or grossed out, but all you have to do is think to yourself gay stuff wigs me out. But does that give me the right to police a consensual relationship between two adults?
The clear answer is no, no it does not.
