Sports Round Up
This week’s games kicked off on Tuesday Nov. 5th with Women’s Volleyball winning against Wheaton College in the first round of the CCIW Playoffs. The women won 3-0 and Melissa McElroy led the match with 10 kills. Rose Syversen had 26 assists and JuliannaVassallo had 20 digs on the defense.
On Thursday, Nov. 7th, the Volleyball team went against #2 Illinois Wesleyan in the semifinals of the CCIW Playoffs. The Big Blue won 3-2 and advanced to the finals where they will face the Carthage College Lady Reds.
For this match, Syversen led with 51 assists, tying her second best game performance record, and Lauren Brummel had 21 kills.
Women’s Basketball opened their season on Nov. 8th at the Tipoff Classic against Greenville University. The Big Blue won 81-74 with Jordan Hildebrand leading 25 and Bailey Coffman scoring 16 points.
Wrestling hosted the Millikin Open on Saturday Nov. 9th with two wrestlers winning in their weight classes. Freshman Peter McCusker won 17-7 by major decision in the 157 pound class and Junior Bradan Birt won 18-2 by technical fall in the 165 pound class.
The Big Blue will travel to Roanoke, Virginia to compete in the Southeast Duals on Nov. 16th and the Star City Classic on Nov. 17th.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming both won in their matches against Carroll University at the Decatur YMCA on Nov. 9th. The men won with a score of 134-40 and the women won 105-100. The teams are on the road for the next meet in Chicago at the University of Chicago Phoenix Fall Classic on Nov. 22-24.
Also on Saturday, the Women’s Basketball won their second straight win against Westminster College. Winning 68-52, the Big Blue are now 2-0 in the season and will next play at Milwaukee School of Engineering on Nov. 16th.
Women’s Volleyball fell to #1 Carthage College in the CCIW Tournament Finals in Kenosha, WI. Marissa McElroy lead with 15 kills and Rose Syversen lead with 38 assists. The Big Blue ends out the overall season 22-13 and 6-2 in the CCIW conference.
The Football team traveled to Washington University and defeated the Bears 35-28 in overtime. Millikin racked up 451 total offensive yards while Wash U had 319 offensive yards. The Big Blue and Bears tied 28-28 in the fourth quarter and went into overtime to see the Big Blue score another touchdown on a five yard run by quarterback Cal Pohrte.
On Wash U’s final possession, Big Blue’s defensive back David Rivers made an interception on the pass and the Big Blue won, making them 5-4 in the season and 4-4 in the conference. The football team will play their final game of the season at home against the North Central College Cardinals on Nov. 16th at 1pm.
