High winds and potential tornado threats is not an ideal start to spring break, but Public Safety has some tips on how to navigate it.
Severe weather warnings were issued for March 14. Weather is predicted to arrive between 7 and 9 p.m.. The safest places to be on campus are on the ground floor of buildings and away from doors and windows. Ground floor bathrooms are the best case scenario in hazardous weather conditions.
“We do not want students traversing campus mid-severe weather event,” Thomas Friend, Assistant Director in the Office of Public Safety, said. “It is safest to remain in the building you are currently in. If able, get as close to the center of the building on the lowest floor possible.”
It is important to watch out for alerts from Public Safety and local news sources during severe weather. They will have important news about Millikin and the surrounding community. On the radio, 1340 AM and 1400 AM are local stations with up-to-date information. WAND, a local TV station, is also a great source for weather-related news, but also go live on Facebook during emergencies.
“High winds will continue to be an issue in our area, especially on open stretches of highway that students may be navigating for spring break,” Friend said. “Any student electing to travel between now and tomorrow afternoon should do so with caution.”
It’s not just the actual storm itself that students should be aware of, there can be lingering dangers after severe weather as well. Broken glass, downed power lines, and hanging tree limbs are all things to take note of and stay far away from.
“Be sure to be aware of your surroundings,” Friend said. “Report any unsafe conditions to Public Safety.”
Public Safety’s phone number is (217) 464-8888. This is your reminder to stay safe, travel with care, and have a severe weather plan in place.
