Over the summer, Wikileaks leaked nearly 20,000 DNC emails revealing several pieces of information about the party’s strategy during the 2016 election. It was revealed in these leaks that the DNC was trying to push Clinton’s campaign over Sanders and trying to make sure that Sanders would not get the nomination. The emails also showed that members of the DNC had a dislike toward Sanders and were attempting to make Clinton appear more favorable to potential Democratic voters. The emails also revealed the possibility of wealthy donors being appointed to certain positions in the government. As a result of these publications, several high up members of the DNC resigned from their positions.
Following these leaks, Wikileaks have continued their involvement with this election in several ways. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has stated recently that he has more information on Clinton and plans to release more information, possibly on her email server, before the presidential debates. Assange has also stated he will offer a $20,000 reward for information on the death of Seth Rich, a DNC employee who was mysteriously murdered after the leaks.
On Tuesday 8/30, ISIS strategist Mohammad al-Adnani was reported to have been killed in northern Syria. ISIS has yet to reveal the cause of alleged death but the Pentagon has acknowledged that he was targeted in a strike near northern Syria on Tuesday. After al-Adnani’s apparent death ISIS released the following message “After a journey filled with sacrifice and fight against non-believers, the Syrian Gallant knight, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, joined the convoy of martyr leaders, To the filthy and coward nonbelievers and to the holders of the Christ emblem, we bring the good news, which will keep them awake, that a new generation in the Islamic State that loves death more than life this generation will only grow steadfast on the path to Jihad, stay determined to seek revenge and be violent toward them.”
While ISIS has confirmed his death, the Pentagon is yet to confirm it. According to Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook “We are still assessing the results of the strike, but al-Adnani’s removal from the battlefield would mark another significant blow to ISIS,” It is believed that al-Adnani had oversaw several of the attacks in Europe over the last year and a half.
On June 23rd, voters in the United Kingdom held a vote on whether or not to leave the European Union, and by a 51% to 48% vote, the United Kingdom voted to leave thus earning the popular name “Brexit”. This referendum was highly debated in the UK and had parties such as the United Kingdom Independence Party and Democratic Unionist Party supporting it while parties such as the Labor Party and the Liberal Democrats were opposed to the referendum.
Following the vote, there was a large amount of backlash in the United Kingdom. Many voters who wanted to remain part of the European Union showed strong criticism towards the results and many were calling for another referendum to be held. Not only, were there many that were disappointed, but even Prime Minister David Cameron resigned from his post. United Kingdom Independence Party leader Nigel Farage also stepped down from his position of power stating that “I am fully behind the party. Let’s see where we are in two and a half years’ time. But I don’t need to be leader of Ukip. I will be part of the 2020 campaign if we don’t get what we want. I am not a career politician. I came into this business because I wanted my country back. We’ve got our country back. If the terms aren’t right, I will do whatever I can to help people to make it right.”
