UCB says Thank You MU for The Laughs
University Center Board hosted its first ever Comedy Open Mic Night on Tuesday February 16, 2016 at 8pm in Einstein’s. It was basically a whimsical shot in the dark idea that popped into my head as a Co-Chair of Late Night/ Novelty Events that was supported and backed up by my fellow UCB members. If you are unfamiliar with UCB, they are a student run organization that creates and implements events in and around campus for students and the campus community to attend and enjoy. If you have attended an event on campus such as the MU Unplugged Open Mic Nights either in Einstein’s or now currently held in Gorin Hall and Homecoming events and of course The Big Events, than you have been privy to the genius and innovative minds that is UCB. The beauty of UCB is that anyone can attend events and any students and people apart of our campus community can become general board members and if they so choose they could become a part of the UCB executive board.
UCB as an organization is in charge of planning and implementing events for the campus community and sometimes the Decatur community. They are made up of students within our campus community who just want to make sure students no matter if they are full time or part time and or whoever they may be and whatever connection to Millikin they have, wind up enjoying themselves at events in and around campus. UCB aims to plan and implements events that cater to a wide variety of hobbies and interests and people from all walks of life. I joined UCB as not only a new general board member but as a new executive board member as well. I had been going to many events UCB puts on and I had been wondering why had I been so hesitant to actually join UCB? I had partly been hesitant because I thought they weren’t necessarily that inviting but I want to stress that was had nothing to do with UCB as an organization, that all in my head and secondly I didn’t have the time to join them in previous semesters. Yet, here I am, loving what I am doing for our campus community and putting on events for all to enjoy with old friend and new friends. So, If you missed out on the first ever Comedy Open Mic Night, you missed a wonderful event.
The Comedy Open Mic Night’s objective was to have people apart of our lovely campus community showcase off their funny bone. It wasn’t heavily attended but what it didn’t have in quantity it made up for it in heart and even though not that many people showed up, the people that did show up made up a solid crowd ready to enjoy some humorous antidotes from their peers. Students apart of Millikin’s community have many talents and humor is definitely one of them. Knock-knock jokes got the event started as they are always a crowd favorite. Next up was there just a round of students telling funny asides about their life and or reciting funny material from their favorite comedians such as Bo Burnham. To cap off the night Gabe Nytes delivered some fantastic original jokes that won him the opportunity to open up for the Pancake Breakfast comedian. His jokes were so amusing he even one student up and out of his seat basically having a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Over all there was a quaint turn out and the night was full of music, lovely community bonding with great jokes and most of all laughter.
