What’s better than having a buffet of desserts laid out for you to eat? Nothing, especially if you are a connoisseur of food.

On Oct. 25, Alpha Chi Omega held their annual philanthropy event Alpha Chi’s and Pies. Many visitors came to enjoy delicacies such as buckeyes, brownies, pizza and of course the most expected dessert: pie. With lots of variety in their choice of dessert, event goers had many to choose from. It was a great evening for both visitors and the Alpha Chi girls, and all to support the continual fight against domestic violence.

There was much preparation put into the event to ensure that it would be successful. Different types of desserts were assigned to each of the sorority members to insure there was a variety as well as having the girls bring in drinks. Decorations were put out hours before the party, and shifts were assigned to have many smiling faces present throughout the evening. Marketing was also done on Facebook by electronic posters and an event page was posted.

Another choice made in preparation was the theme for the event. Wanting to do something creative, Brianne Barrett, vice president of philanthropy for Alpha Chi Omega, decided to have the event be Halloween themed, capitalizing on the theme of the time of the year.

When asked what her favorite part of Alpha Chi’s and Pies was, Barrett said, “I think my favorite part was organizing the event since I knew it was for our philanthropy, and that’s what really drives me.”

Many of the other members agreed with this statement who are also very passionate about the philanthropy. Many girls enjoy the event because it’s a great way to give back to the community and the different organizations fighting against domestic violence.

Audrey Allen, a junior and member of Alpha Chi Omega, said this on the philanthropy: “I really love our philanthropy because of how much we can be involved in the community and how much we’re able to give back to it. I love how much we can help people who need it.”

The night started off at 6 p.m., where a good number of students and families came out to the festivities. There was a good flow of visitors leading up to the begging of the Greek hour, where a very large amount of people showed up to show support and get goodies. At one point the house was standing room only with a line going out the door. The most popular desert at this time was pies, of course, along with the pizza and other desserts such as brownies.

In addition to being able to have either one plate or unlimited dessert, there were also raffles for pies and the chance to buy desserts at the end of the night. Games were also held in the basement for additional raffle tickets. There was a ring toss, pumpkin bowling, a ball game and pin the spider on the web.

One winner of the raffle, Hannah Shatinsky of Delta Delta Delta, said, “I was very excited to win a pie because I have never won anything in something like this before.”

Congratulations to all who won a pie in the raffles for coming out, and thank you to all who decided to buy desserts to support the philanthropy. After the event, the extra desserts were taken to the homeless shelter to help put a smile on the patrons’ faces. In total, Alpha Chi Omega raised over $1300 to support their philanthropy.
