DHOP a Success

Because one of the major components of any Greek sorority or fraternity is philanthropy, almost all of Millikin University’s Greek organizations have created extremely unique ways in order to both raise money for a charitable cause and present an event to the student body that can be a fun and sociable time.

One of the main ways that Greek organizations accomplish these goals is by having some sort of dining themed event for students, which has been done by a number of both sororities and fraternities. Every year Pi Beta Phi, a sorority on campus, hosts Green Eggs and Ham, an event to fight illiteracy. In addition, earlier this year Delta Sigma Phi hosted a fundraiser called Don’t Stop the Pasta and, most recently, Delta Delta Delta hosted Delta House of Pancakes 2015: A cure is out there!

According to the Facebook page created for the event, the Delta House of Pancakes event is an annual fundraiser in which students of Millikin University are invited to go to the Delta Delta Delta house to enjoy all you can eat breakfast with fellow students for a cost of $5 for a ticket before the event or $7 at the door for the event.

Additionally, donations were held for those who wouldn’t be in attendance, but wanted to give a donation. All of the proceeds for the event go to the Saint Jude Children’s research hospital.. Another motivator to encourage student to come to the event was a coupon to see the Pipe Dreams production of A Nightmare on Backstreet, which was performed at Pipe Dreams theatre the following weekend.

The event had the sisters of Delta Delta Delta extremely busy, in order to create both a fun environment for students to enjoy, while, also spending time creating the food for the event. The Delta Delta Delta house was decorated to resemble the Disney film “Up.” Students of Millikin University were able to experience food that has been homemade, as the members of Delta Delta Delta personally made the food that was served to the students, which included pancakes, sausage and eggs.

Ultimately, this year’s DHOP was a major success. According to the Facebook page created for the event, over 600 hundred students were in attendance. Additionally, from the combination of preselling tickets, selling tickets at the door and by letting those who weren’t going to attend the event contribute a donation anyway, the Delta House of Pancakes fundraiser ended up earning $2,735, which will all be donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in order to further investigate diseases, such as cancer, that affects children.

DHOP is a reminder to the students and faculty members of Millikin University about how charitable the sororities and fraternities around campus truly are. Planning, getting the word out around campus of the event, decorating the Delta Delta Delta house and making and serving food took a lot of preparing, in order to ensure that students were having an enjoyable time with good food in a comfortable setting, while also giving money to an extremely great cause. This great execution of a fun event for students, while also donating money to a notable cause, just shows how far the Greek members of our school will work.
