Don’t Stop the Pasta Fundraiser
Greek life is a big part of colleges and universities across the country, and Millikin University is no different. Despite all the college movies trying to make Greek life seem like it is one big four year long, non-stop party, the reality of it is that Greek Life is very focused about their philanthropic ambitions more than anything else. One part of being a member of a fraternity or sorority requires service to the community.
Fraternities and sororities here at Millikin are part of a nationwide effort to take part in different service projects for a long list of various charities as well as projects that help the local communities. One of the Fraternities here at Millikin, Delta Sigma Phi held a fundraiser event over this past weekend titled Don’t Stop the Pasta.
At the event, the fraternity served a variety of pastas that were cooked by the various brothers of Delta Sigma Phi as well as from Delta Sigma Phi Alumni, and Millikin’s Chef Brian. All of the proceeds of the event went to The American Red Cross.
The event was held on Saturday, Sept. 19 in the Woods Clubhouse during Millikin University’s “Fall Family Weekend”, a weekend long event in which family members of the student body come down to visit for the weekend. When asked if there was any reason that the organization chose this weekend to host the event, Delta Sigma Phi member, Junior Kevin Stoffel stated, “We thought it would be a fun event for Fall Family Weekend, since several fraternity brother’s parents and families would be visiting this weekend, it would also be a good way for the brothers and their parents to socialize and get to know the families of their fellow fraternity brothers.”
According to Delta Sigma Phi member, senior Dave Thompson this event came to be when the service chair of Delta Sigma Phi, Michael Sheldon, talked to another Delta Sigma Phi chapter in the area. Thompson said, “I think it was the University of Illinois chapter, and they had the same event, they cooked a lot of pasta as had a fundraiser for charity similar to this, and so we thought it would be a good idea to do something similar to that and raise money for the American Red Cross.”
Thompson also said that they weren’t working towards any specific goal and were only trying to raise money while having a fun day with good people. “We are just hoping to raise what we can as well as donate what we can to the American Red Cross.” This event was a great way to raise money and give back to the community especially since it was held on a day when there would be more than just students at campus.
