Supreme Court Marriage Ruling

After decades of struggling this summer the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriages were constitutional and will be legal in every state in the United States. This means that no couple can be prevented from getting a marriage license because of their sexuality.

Some states however are still fighting against this ruling in the only way they can: by preventing all couples from getting marriage licenses. Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Utah and Tennessee are all still trying to prevent these marriages. It’s unclear how long they will be able to keep this up.

US Transgender Citizens Serving in Military

The Department of Defense has been working on changing the law that states’ transgender citizens are not able to serve in the military. It’s expected that in May 2016 all transgender citizens will have the right to serve their country openly without fear of punishment. This law is the natural course of action to follow the repeal of the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” law.

It’s estimated that around 15,000 transgender troops already serve in the military. Because of this, and in addition to other studies, medical professionals have stated that there is no direct or indirect negative cause for transgender people to serve in the military.

Bisexuality Study

Scientists at Notre Dame have conducted a study of the likelihood of bisexuality among men and women. Research shows that women are more likely to identify as bisexual than men. It’s also shown that women are more likely to be fluid with their sexuality definition than men.

One of the questions raised in this study is whether or not this evidence proves that bisexuality is a choice. Researchers say that this isn’t true. While women may be more likely to have fluid tendencies, the fact remains that any degree of homosexuality is something that is genetic, not a choice. Whether or not a person who is bisexual acts on their split attractions is all up to the individual.

Stonewall Movie

Recently a movie about the Stonewall Riots has been announced to be released in theatres later this year. The Riots in question were a turning point in the fight for equality for the LGBTQ community. It was especially concentrated on the transgender people involved in the movement.

This movie has been considered to be controversial among people in the LGBTQ community because of the casting. The main character of the movie is a white, homosexual male. In this movie it’s shown that he throws the first brick. In the actual Stonewall Riots it was a black transgender woman named Marsha P. Johnson who sparked the riot. This makes for another whitewashed and trans burying false representation of queer history in media.
