Millipalooza comes again
School is back session, and so is the music. UCB started the year off right by hosting their annual event “Millipalooza” on Aug. 29. Millipalooza had free food, games and t-shirts for the first 150 people. Millipalooza was good time for all who attended since there was something for everyone.
Valina Houng, the junior UCB music chair was in charge of the event. Houng said, “Millipalooza was such a success this year, and it was all because of the awesome performers and the wonderful turnout.
“My goal was to make this Millikin favorite even better than it was before. We wanted to mirror the festival of Lollapalooza since the event’s name is essentially a play on the name.”
Although it was difficult to emulate the entirety of the music festival, UCB did a great job at facilitating an event that had people singing, eating, laughing, slip ‘n sliding, tie dying and painting.
“’Daring to dream means daring to live’ were the words we wanted to etch into people’s minds because it was the beginning of a new school year and it was also one of the first events that a student organization puts on,” Houng said. “It is always so fulfilling to see something you produce and create come alive and have it received so well by a large group of people.”
The event was on the quad from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There were many different students at the event enjoying the inflatables, music and free food.
Millipalooza had six different acts for the full event’s length. Blue Harmony, the female acapella group performed a few songs as well as crowd favorite Tim Gorski. The second half of the event included performances by sophomore Emily Martinez and the acoustic duo Trouvère and junior Mandy Haack. The event concluded with a performance by the acapella group seVen.
Throughout the event students could enter to win a Fitbit by using the hashtag #DreamUCB and taking a picture of them and UCB member. The winner of the Fitbit was junior Veronica Fernandez.
Millipalooza also had a giant Dream catcher that students could paint during the event. The Dream catcher will be up in RTUC for the school year.
Trevor May, a junior commercial music major, co sponsored the event with Valina and came up with the idea to make a giant dream catcher. UCB is always working on creating fun, and free alternative programming for students.
Millipalooza was huge success and there will more music events this semester. UCB will be having an Open Mic Night at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 in Einstein’s. Millipalooza was a great start to new semester.
