Millikin University Offers Science Entrepreneurship Speaker Series
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, the staff of Millikin University gave a lecture, headed by Dr. David Horn, an associate professor of Millikin University’s Biology Department, pertaining to the Millikin University Institute for Science Entrepreneurship. It was a part of the spring 2015 Science Entrepreneurship Speaker Series, and it was held at 7:30 p.m. in lower RTUC.
The lecture was directed towards Millikin University students who are focusing in science as their course of study. It specifically focused “on science entrepreneurship and how an increased emphasis on entrepreneurship can spark job creation and societal well-being,” according to the website for Millikin University’s Press Releases.
The speech featured two main speakers who urged the students in the audience to adapt the learning there scientific studies into producing fruitful companies.
One of the speakers was Mark D. Schweitzer. A graduate of Ohio State University, Indiana Wesleyan University, and Harvard University, Mr. Schweitzer has worked his way up the corporate ladder, working his way through various management positions through ADM, and eventually becoming the managing director of Intermodal and International Container Freight.
During the lecture, Mr. Schweitzer discussed how students studying science should look towards companies that focus on transportation, which will provide fruitful jobs, providing his own personal examples from his company.
The second speaker who addressed the audience during the lecture was Bruce Stoddard He discussed how the company Midwest Inland Part impacted Parke Inc.’s recent decision to increase.
This lecture was one of the many lectures that the Millikin University Institute for Science Entrepreneurship has had and will offer during the spring semester. Every speech provides a keynote speaker who, in one way or another, works for a job that would benefit from students studying science.
During the first speech for the Science and Entrepreneurship Speaker Series, which took place on Thursday, Jan. 29, Steve Coventry, the Vice President and General Manager for Decatur Operations and Akorn Pharmaceuticals, spoke to both students and faculty members of Millikin University.
There will be an additional two speeches for the lecture series this semester. On Tuesday, Mar. 17, Time Eckels, the Vice President of Community Benefit, Public Policy, and Advocacy, who represents the Hospital Sisters Health System, will speak to the university. To conclude the lecture series, Ken Smithmier the President and CEO of Illinois Health and Science, will speak to Millikin University on Thursday, Apr. 30.
