The Future of Fine Arts at Millikin

When it comes to fine arts, Millikin isn’t afraid to show off what it has to offer. A large group of students at Millikin are involved in fine arts programs like theatre, dance, music and art. Over five hundred students dedicate themselves to their programs.

In an interview with Nick Throop, admission counselor for Millikin University, he discussed the prospective students who may enroll in the fall of 2015.

Last week, around 300 students came and toured Millikin’s campus. Prospective students stayed in dorms with current students to get a feel for what living at Millikin is like.

“I wanted to make them feel at home here like I do. I gave my prospective student tours of other halls and shared all the great things Millikin comes with,” Abigail Benans-Hillard, freshman theater major, said. “My student was pretty worried about the audition process, but I made sure she didn’t stress herself out. I shared my experiences about how Millikin is less about competition and more about self-growth. Millikin is a place for support with lots of great people here to help you out.”

One hundred students and their families came for honors interview day, 50 students came for the department of theatre and dance, and 45 students came for music. There were also 130 students that came for a visit day. Those students also auditioned for their prospective programs.

“Overall, Millikin had a very successful couple days with the prospective students,” Throop said. He expects around 110 music students, 10 to20 art students, and around 65 students in the theatre and dance programs.

Throop also assures that the fall 2015 theatre program won’t be as large as it was this past fall.  “We do not have the capacity to fit the amount of students we had last year. Due to faculty needs and space constraints, it’s not feasible to take a larger class,” Throop said.

Last fall, there were over 80 students enrolled in the theatre program, and it was the biggest theatre class Millikin has had in a while. Throop ensures that even though the program will be shrunk down a bit, it will still remain as incredible as it always has been. Millikin’s theatre program has been something to envy and prospective students will keep up with that tradition.
