Institute for Science Entrepreneurship Speaker Series

The science speaker’s series is being held in the lower level of Leighty-Tabor Science Center throughout the months of March and the beginning of April starting Thursday. This program is an annual event here at Millikin University and is hosted by Dr. Horn. It is one of Millikin’s signature programs geared towards the students, staff and community.

The science series blends together science and business, teaching the individuals in the audience that it takes knowledge and the ability of change to prosper in both fields. The theme of the speaker, Ms. Robin King, was Change. How change in her company not only effectively regained credibility and finances but is also what interested her in the EPL Bio Analytical Services, where she serves as the Chief Executive Officer.

Some of the many highlights of her lecture included the update in technology and how that has had a positive effect on her company and bringing the company back from possibly closing its doors to a well-known business in the Decatur area.

In a description of her co-workers and the environment in which they have created Ms. King said, “Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.” She said that each person within her company was creative, excellent in their field, and when given the opportunity they do more than what is expected giving 110 percent all the time. She reminded the audience to do what they love. “You need to love what you do, and nothing can stop you,” King said. That was the best advice she could give to her audience and explained if you loved what you did then everything else would fall into places, even though there will be struggles along that path.

From here, she explained her position and history of the EPL Bio Analytical Services Company. Showing that over time they were able to adapt to the changes in both science and business by learning and thinking outside the box. They used goals to set the plan and atmosphere of their workplace. Their first goal and longest goal was to increase capacity, and once they met that a few years ago, they added their second goal: diversity profitability.

They were able to work on that second goal by learning how to use social media as a tool to gain more business, and then by not only attending science conferences but also speaking and networking at those conferences. Today their competition praises and recommends them to potential clients because of their honesty in business, standards and accountability.

The next speaker in the speaker’s series is Dr. Cedric Pearce, he is the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Offer at Mycosynthetic Inc. and that lecture is Thursday March 7th, in room LTSC 001. Followed by the last presenter April 10th in LRTUC at 7:30pm. This speaker is from ADM, a local business in Decatur, IL, and his role in ADM is Senior VP of Research Division.
