New Professor: Dr. Yuhan Hua
Dr. Yuhan Hua is the one of the most recent newcomers to the Tabor School of Businesses’ entrepreneurship department. Dr. Hua is a recent graduate from the University of Louisville Doctorate Program of Entrepreneurship in the summer of 2018. Upon getting her Ph.D. she immediately came here to Millikin to teach entrepreneurship.
Being born in the Laos part of China, Dr. Hua got her start in pharmaceuticals working for a pharmaceutical company in China for two years after attending school in China’s capital, Beijing to get her Bachelors in Biochemistry. While working as a pharmaceutical representative, Dr. Hua discovered she enjoyed the marketing side of business and applied to schools in the U.S. to get her master’s in marketing where she then went on to get her PH.D. in Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Hua’s career goals were clear to her early on in her life. With her father being a professor in China and her mother being a researcher, Dr. Hua knew that she eventually wanted to do both of those things once she was able. Dr. Hua specially wanted to teach at the university level, so she could “give back to students” as a big part of her success in both her education and career fields, because she met people who were professors that helped and mentored her as she was constantly trying to improve herself.
One example of how Dr. Hua hopes she can give back is specifically to international students studying in the U.S. who hope to find sponsors for their visas. Being from China and in the United States on a visa meant that she needed to find a sponsor for her visa to stay longer and was grateful that Millikin had the resources and was willing to be her sponsor.
The courses Dr. Hua is teaching in the Tabor School of Business is Business Creation, Foundation of Entrepreneurship, and Art of Entrepreneurship which she says she enjoys because it “allows her to see from a higher perspective how entrepreneurship is being taught” while also giving her more freedom to look at courses than she would expect being a newcomer to Millikin’s School of Business.
Dr. Hua also noted that she had a diverse set of students not only because of majors but background as well, with each having their own set of interesting traits that she thought was valuable in her class and entrepreneurship, in general.
While work and academics are what takes up much of her time during the week, Dr. Hua does have her own hobby that she misses and pursues when she has time. Dr. Hua enjoys playing video games on her computer.
When she was younger and in college she enjoyed playing games such as Diablo 3 and spent a large amount of time playing a mage in World of Warcraft doing raids, large dungeons filled with monsters and treasures that were typically done and completed with groups as large as twenty-five people.
Since, she received her PH. D and is now teaching, Dr. Hua has moved toward playing single player video games that she can play more on her own time such as Don’t Starve, a top down survival game where the goal as the name implies is to not starve to death while finding resources to craft better items to improve your chances of surviving.
With the new school year for Millikin and the Tabor School of Business, the stage is set for new arrivals such as Dr. Hua to demonstrate what they can add to the continuing growth of Millikin and to their respective professions.
