Netflix Review: Arrested Development
The large amount of popularity Netflix has received has allowed the company to start making its own movies and television programs, which, in popular opinion, has led to extremely diverse and innovative programing.
Besides creating its own television programs, Netflix has also taken shows that were extremely popular when aired on syndicated television channels, but were eventually canceled too early for their run, disappointing fans everywhere. One of the first Netflix original shows where a show that was canceled was picked up again is “Arrested Development.”
“Arrested Development,” which aired on the Fox network for 2003 to 2005, centers on the Bluths, a wealthy family living in southern California and are invested in a real estate company. However, the head of the family, George Sr., is arrested for alleged treason in the first episode of the season, leaving his most capable son, Michael Bluth, to take over his father’s company and keep his family in line He also finds himself having to help his father prove his innocence, despite the fact that Michael rarely wants anything to do with his family.
The show became extremely popular for its characters, style and premise. The characters of the show are known for their eccentric personalities. Two of the most beloved characters in the show are Lucille Bluth – the mother of the family who is an alcoholic and extremely manipulative of her own family – as well as George Oscar Bluth – a struggling magician who consistently tries to help his family, which usually leads to failure.
The format of the show helped it receive great attention during its release. When creating the show, the creators wanted to film the show in a documentary style, to create a sense of realism to the show, while having a script that is extremely stylized, in order to channel in the unique humor of the show. Additionally, “Arrested Development” also features the narration from Ron Howard, who’s one of the main producers of the show, which also adds to the quirky sense of humor of the show.
Although the show received a cult following and was extremely popular with critics, the Fox network decided to cancel the show after a just the third season in 2005, as the network deemed that the show wasn’t receiving enough viewers during its run.
While the show received low viewership during its run on the Fox network, as time passed the show began to be immensely popular, leading to fans and critics to call for the series to return to television. As Netflix announced that it would begin streaming directly offline, Arrested Development was picked up for a fourth season.
Because of the freedom that Netflix allows for its shows, the creators of “Arrested Development” were able to further adapt the show to their liking. Instead of episodes featuring all of the characters, season four of Arrested Development just focuses on one character for each episode, allowing the development of the characters to be further explored. Additionally, season four also featured a greater scope of a storyline, as the characters are wrapped up in their own stories, as well as many celebrity cameos, like Ron Howard.
Due to the popularity of the fourth season, Netflix has announced that a fifth season will air. In addition, the actors and creators of the show have discussed the possibility of an “Arrested Development” movie.
