Club Spotlight: Note-ified
In the past few years American society has seen an increase of interest and participation in one of the most unique ways to perform vocal music, a cappella groups.
With movies and television shows like “Pitch Perfect” and “Glee,” more attention has been given to a cappella groups. Millikin University has experienced a rise in a cappella groups around the campus. One group specifically, Note-ified, has become quite popular on campus, performing at various venues with a unique style.
Note-ified is an all-male a cappella group which is composed of students Tyler Davis, Brendan Chapman, Harrison Meggos, Deion Corley, Andres Rivera, Brian David, Rafael Wilson, Isaiah Lopez, Ryan Bodine, Jordan Comish, Dillion Blankenship and Hunter Soyak.
Although Note-ified has become a very popular a cappella group across Millikin University’s campus, the origins of the group differ greatly from the group’s current composition.
“We were actually two different groups that ended up conjoining first semester during Fall of 2014,” Hunter Soyak, a bass in the group said. “We roughly had 14 guys at the start of the group, but, as time went on, nine guys stuck with it, and we eventually had a concert second semester with fellow a cappella SeVen and Blue Harmony. It was our first time really showing off what we had and it was an incredible experience.”
Because of the positive reaction that the group received after playing their first time, as well as the general sense of enjoyment that the members of the group themselves received from performing, the group decided to continue practicing and performing music.
However, because of certain circumstances, one of the past members of the group had to leave his position. Therefore, according to Soyak during the interview, the group had to hold open auditions in order to replace the lost member. Although it was disappointing to the group to lose a member, four additional people were chosen to be a part of the group after the open auditions were held.
Note-ified performs a very diverse range of genres of songs.
“We perform a winde range of songs including genres of pop, fold, and even Doo-wop,” Soyak said. “We have a variety of songs in our repertoire.”
This has shown heavily during the last performance of Note-ified, which occurred on Oct. 7 at Kaeuper Hall. Some of the songs that the a cappella group performed during their concert included “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” “Sh Boom” and “Don’t/No Diggity,”
Additionally, although never directly elaborated upon, during the interview with Soyak, he hinted on the possibility of the group performing some sort of Christmas themed show, as Soyak said “We may even have some holiday carols down the line, so be on the lookout for us!”
While the group is very musically diverse, the places where Note-ified has performed is also extremely diverse.
Soyak said, “So far we have performed on Millikin’s campus events including Fall Family Weekend, the talent show and we also opened up for M-Pact, a professional a cappella group that featured Millikin alum Jarrett Johnson. Not too long ago, we had our first stand-alone concert, and it went very well.”
Additionally, the a cappella group has performed at events outside of Millikin University, such as a Dennis Lab School event and at a birthday party.
