Netflix Review: What’s On Youtube?
Recently I have been neglecting my Netflix obsession, after finishing HIMYM, I have been searching for new shows to waste my free time with, and a friend recommended that I take to YouTube and watch a show called “Most Popular Girls in School.”
At first I was extremely hesitant, I have heard of shows existing entirely on YouTube, but I questioned the value of the show based on the title alone. The fact that the recommendation came from a friend who often frequents the weird side of YouTube also made me reluctant to check out the show.
It happened last Thursday. I was sitting in my room enjoying some free time when my friend stopped by. Not really knowing what to do, he suggested that we watch Most Popular Girls in School (MPGIS). I thought, why not, I will watch a few to pass the time.
If you’re completely unfamiliar with the show MPGIS, then the first thing you should know is that the show is stop motion animated using dolls. That’s right, dolls of all various plastic types. As the first episode begins, I immediately think, “What is this show?”
Let me tell you up front that 51 episodes into this YouTube series, I still find myself asking the same question. What is this show? The conclusion that I have finally come to is that MPGIS is awesome.
Fans of films such as “Mean Girls” and “Clueless” will quickly latch on to the crass humor presented in MPGIS. What makes the show laugh out loud hysterical, and yes, you will actually laugh out loud, is that it, like “Mean Girls” and “Clueless,” presents a caricature of what it’s like to be a high school student.
While you probably didn’t do anything as drastic as ripping a girls arms off in the hallway, you understand the motivation behind the characters’ actions and that is what makes this piece comically.
MPGIS has a really broad cast of characters, all of which have their own special brand of humor. Saison Marguerite is a clueless foreign exchange student who’s every action annoys the very blunt cheerleader Brittnay Matthews, Shay Van Buren plays the socialite and enemy to head cheerleader Mackenzie Zales and Trisha is her own very special character.
The episodes in MPGIS are fairly short. They do not last longer than about 12 minutes each, and some even being drastically shorter. However, in that brief time the creators of MPGIS are able to quickly catch the watcher’s attention and deliver an episode with its own plot that still feeds the overall plot of the season.
Yes, you read correctly, seasons. MPGIS is currently in its fourth season, and the show has been on YouTube premiering new episodes since May 2012. The creators of the show vow that they will produce and premier an episode every Tuesday. Once I get caught up with season four, I hope they stay true to that bargain.
When you listen to people talk about the MPGIS you think, “Wow, that sounds completely ridiculous,” and you would be right in thinking so. Nonetheless, I strongly encourage you to check out the The Most Popular Girls in School. As Saison Marguerite would say, the show is, “how do you say, awesome!”
