The Future is Now: Household Innovations

There are smaller innovations that have been seen recently that can give your home a futuristic edge. Furnishings that are trending are getting sleeker. Furniture pieces are starting to serve more than one purpose. This week we will be looking at two trendy home innovations that, while they may be ridiculously overpriced, but it is nice to dream that we might have homes as trendy as these.

The first item on the list is the LIFX light bulb. A light bulb you say? Now how could that ever be futuristic? It has been around for over a hundred years. Actually, this light bulb is quite innovative. Over the years the light bulb has evolved from a thing that could barely last to our energy efficient light bulbs today that can last for several years. LIFX has aimed to take the light bulb a step further by incorporating one of the most important things from our society today: Wi-Fi.

Even though it sounds ridiculous it is actually pretty cool. The LIFX light bulb has the technology built in it so that it has a self-sustaining Wi-Fi   signal that can connect directly to a controlling smartphone. With the app that comes with it, a user can turn the light on and off and change the intensity of the light.

While that would be all well and good, what truly makes this light bulb stand out from the rest? Well, you can also change the color of the light. Do you want a room that has a bright yellow sunshine feel? You can do that. Do you maybe want a mellowed out purple in your room at night so you can relax? You can do that too. There is no end to the possibilities that come with these lights.

The next device is perfect for that first apartment out of college. Most people can only afford a small one room apartment once they leave school because of college funds. While this device would never be in the budget, it could definitely make the space more livable.

MIT has been working on a project they call the CityHome project. This device looks like a giant closet, when all actuality it holds practically everything a person could need to furnish their apartment. It has a bed, table, counter space and adjustable lighting. While it is bulky, it can also be run on a track so that if you need more space in the living room area it will slide to the side.

This is just a short list of home innovations, but with so much happening in the technological world it was only a matter of time before our houses became smart houses.
