The Future is Now: Back to the Future Edition

If you are a fan of the “Back to the Future” movies you know that the year has finally arrived. It is 2015 and we have been promised all of these amazing inventions that come with this year. From flying cars to rejuvenating centers, this movie got everyone looking forward to a futuristic 2015. While most of these inventions will probably never come to pass, there are a few that have actually become a reality.

The first of these is something that was covered in an earlier edition of The Future is Now: Hoverboards. As a reminder, the company Hendo Hover has been in the process of making a Hoverboard that will work on all terrains. At the moment, they have a fully functional magnetic powered one. The only down side to it right now is that it can only be used over a magnetic field, and it is very loud. This makes commercial use difficult, but it’s in the works actively.

The next invention that they told us we would have is the hologram. As it can be seen in most futuristic films there is usually the presence of some type of hologram. The creators at Bleen Technology have been working for years to create a commercially produced holographic system that you can have in your own home. This system requires no glasses to work. All you have to do is select a program and watch the projection in your own home. You can do interactive work out videos or interact with holographic wildlife. There is no end to the possibilities with this device. The device costs around $800. While that is a bit much for a college student to afford it’s not bad for a device of this nature.

The final device that has become a reality is the self-strapping shoes. In 2011 Nike came out with a special edition of a shoe that looked exactly like Marty McFly’s shoes in “Back to the Future II.” However, they didn’t have the technology at the time for the self-tying laces. But this year they plan to release them, as this is the year that the movie traveled to.

This movie has inspired inventors of all ages to create for now. It’s a truly wonderful thing that movies have inspired this reality.
