Favorite Classes at Millikin

There are many classes offered at Millikin, but not all have been created equally. Often the descriptions for most classes are often nothing like the reality of the class, and so we rely on our fellow students to tell us the truth about what a class is like.

Luckily, the professors who teach at Millikin are one-of-a-kind. Most are open and willing to talk with students about more than just the subject matter, which allows students to create relationships that can help them for the rest of their lives. It’s not just the professor or the subject matter that makes a great class though, it also has a lot to do with how the class is taught. Combining interesting subject matter with an interesting way of teaching is how students learn best, and how they come to identify their favorite class at Millikin.

Kelly Kaufenberg, a senior communication major, named issues in mass media, which she took with Professor Meister, as her favorite class at Millikin.

“I learned a lot of history about mass media,” Kaufenberg said. “Before taking the class I didn’t know that the magazine Cosmopolitan had started out as a more serious magazine. Plus, Rudyard Kipling, the man who wrote ‘The Jungle Book,’ used to write for them!”

Jacqueline Dumitrescu’s favorite class lies on the other end of the spectrum.

“I love cultures and how they have an influence on each other’s music, so my favorite class was introduction to ethnomusicology,” Dumitrescu saud. “It’s part of the core curriculum for me, but it has still really influenced what I want to do with my life. Although it might be hard for a non-major, they are able to take it as well because it counts as an IN-350.”

Stephanie Mabrym a human services major, most fondly remembers young adult vampire literature.

“Dr. Vicki Gilpin is an amazing professor,” Mabrym said. “She’s very good at portraying everything in pop culture and very good at making sure that students understand the meaning of things. I think people take it because it sounds easy, but it’s actually a very serious class that you can learn a lot from.”

Hopefully, throughout your journey at Millikin, choosing your favorite class won’t be an easy task. With any luck, there will be many classes that will inspire you and lead you to new ways of thinking. When you run into a class which makes your favorites list, don’t be afraid to recommend it.
